Arsenal's Declan Rice scored a late goal at Bayern Munich in a thrilling 2-2 draw on Matchday 3 of the UEFA Champions League, the title contenders splitting the points in Wednesday's marquee matchup.
The Gunners' Eberechi Eze opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Alphonso Davies notched an equalizer 10 minutes later. Ballon d'Or nominee Harry Kane put Bayern ahead with a second half penalty, only for his England teammate Declan Rice to nab an equalizer in the 82nd minute. The point is a valuable one for Bayern, who were without the suspended Michael Olise and the injured Jamal Musiala for the fixture. Arsenal, meanwhile, will be pleased with their ability to rescue a point but leave the Allianz Arena with concerns about Bukayo Saka, who exited the match after 10 minutes with an apparent quad injury.
Earlier in the day, Manchester United's dismal season continued with a 4-1 demolition at Como. Nico Paz notched two goals and an assist along the way for the Champions League newcomers, who now have two wins out of three to start the campaign. United, meanwhile, are now winless in their last seven games across all competitions and have not won since a lopsided victory over Sabah on Matchday 1.
The highlights of the day include Real Madrid's 4-1 win over RB Leipzig and LASK's 3-2 win at Sporting CP, the Austrian side coming back from a 1-0 deficit to collect their first-ever Champions League win.
89' Sporting CP are going to run this down to the wire, Luis Suarez scoring with minutes left on the clock to trim LASK's lead. The visitors are still up 3-2 but it'll be a thrilling race to the finish line in Lisbon.
87' Real Madrid restore their three goal lead courtesy of Yan Diomande, who comes up with an impressive finish for his first Champions League goal at the Bernabeu. He doesn't celebrate against his former club RB Leipzig but he's visibly overjoyed -- who wouldn't be if they were in his shoes?
84' And speaking of consolation goals, Viking have one of their own at Villa Park courtesy Peter Christiansen. It won't do much to erase Aston Villa's 3-1 lead, though, no upset incoming for this Champions League newcomer.
85' Another theme of the day appears to be consolation goals, because RB Leipzig have one of their own now. Shortly after the restart, Christoph Baumgartner combines with Tidiam Gomis to finally get one past Thibaut Courtois but it only helps so much. Real Madrid have a 3-1 lead now and are already on course to win the game.
83' Kylian Mbappe is now on the scoresheet with an impeccable finish from the edge of the penalty area, an impressive way to notch his 73rd Champions League goal. Real Madrid now have a 3-0 lead over RB Leipzig, a victory a near guarantee at this point.
82' It's 2-2 at the Allianz Arena! Viktor Gyokeres nicks the ball off of an opponent in the box and whether or not he meant to follow that up with a lay-up for Declan Rice is irrelevant because he manages to do just that. Rice's commitment to make the run allows him to pounce and eventually come up with a powerful finish that sets up an interesting finish against Bayern Munich.
77' Ten men, no problem. Inter have a long-awaited goal, Henrikh Mkhitaryan picking out an excellent pass for Carlos Augusto who comes up with the finish to give his side a 1-0 lead over Shakhtar Donetsk. You can see the relief on coach Cristian Chivu's face -- this has not been an easy Champions League campaign so far but they are now 10-plus minutes away from a much-needed win.
72' And speaking of Club Brugge, they've added another to their tally against Lens. Carlos Forbs adds his name to the scoresheet this time, combining with Hugo Vetlesen for this one. Still plenty of time left across Europe's other games but this result currently has Brugge in 11th.
69' No goals yet at the San Siro but there is a red card, Inter's Alessandro Bastoni picking up two yellows in the span of three minutes to ensure his team will play down a man for the rest of the game. Inter's Champions League campaign has been full of unfortunate moments, first marked by losses to Real Madrid and Club Brugge and now this.
68' That escalated quickly! LASK now have a another goal for a 3-1 lead at Sporting CP, Krystof Danek doing the honors this time. He does so in style, too, noticing not only the space afforded to him by goalkeeper Kaique Pereira but finishing the chance with a nutmeg. LASK may just be on the way to their first-ever Champions League win in style.
62' It really is unraveling for Viking now, who add an own goal to the list of mistakes made at Villa Park today. Henrik Heggheim begrudgingly will take credit for that one, a goal that puts Aston Villa on pace for a third win out of three in the Champions League this season.
63' Fascinating development in Lisbon! Sporting's early lead against Champions League newcomers LASK is officially a thing of the past, the visitors now up 2-1 with about a half hour on the clock. Robert Ljubicic combines with Sasa Kalajdzic for the finish as the Austrian side chase their first-ever win in the competition.
60' Again, I say, big day for penalties in the Champions League! The referee calls a handball on Jurien Timber so Harry Kane steps up to take the penalty. He's as reliable as any so of course, he converts the spotkick with relative ease. The Tottenham Hotspur academy product adds yet another goal against Arsenal to his tally to give Bayern Munich a 2-1 lead, and he has now scored in each of his last 10 Champions League games.
Who's to say who the next Ballon d'Or winner will be, especially now that voting has already closed, but Kane has made as good an argument as anyone over the last year, that's for sure.
59' Big day for penalties in the Champions League, the latest coming in Spain. Real Betis pick up one and Isco converts from the spot with little fuss, giving his side a 1-0 lead over Feyenoord. There's just one scoreless game left -- Inter's clash with Shakhtar Donetsk.
52' Real Madrid assemble their stars to double their lead, the hosts beginning to put the game out of RB Leipzig's reach. Jude Bellingham's slick cross finds Kylian Mbappe on the far post but the ball passes by Arda Guler on the way, the Turkiye international getting the final touch just to make sure the ball lands in the back of the net.
50' Looks like Club Brugge are picking up from where they left off in the first half. They've got another goal against Lens, this time courtesy of Joaquin Seys. Lens goalkeeper Robin Risser can't clear the ball out of danger with a crowd in front of him in the box, Seys the closest to the ball but needs two tries to pull off the finish. He won't care how long it took, though -- Brugge are on their way to their second Champions League win in three.
45'+3 Club Brugge close out the first half with a go-ahead goal against Lens, courtesy of Belgium international Hans Vanaken. The visitors were the aggressors in the first half but it's Brugge who ultimately have the lead, capitalizing on an important opportunity even if others have been few and far between.
44' RB Leipzig may have had more meaningful looks at goal up until this point but Real Madrid are the ones who take the lead just before the break, Bernardo Silva coming up with the finish for his first goal since March. Thibaut Courtois' efforts at the other end are looking all the more important now that the hosts have the lead.
37' Viking's Zlatko Tripic is called for a foul on Alysson and after a VAR check, Aston Villa have a penalty. Emiliano Buendia comes up with an easy finish for a 2-0 lead over the Norwegian visitors, the game perhaps already getting away from them.
35' Harry Kane connects with Alphonso Davies, who comes up with a simple finish to level the score at one against Arsenal. The standout thing here is Kane's pass -- he's as famous as it gets for his goalscoring ability but Kane has an almost underrated ability to create chances for his teammates. That was clear to see here, though, picking out a perfect ball for Davies.
30' Play has been halted temporarily between Club Brugge and Lens since there are flares on the pitch. The players have used the opportunity for an impromptu water break.
26' Arsenal may be without Bukayo Saka but Eberechi Eze is so far filling in nicely. Martin Odegaard comes up with a nice pass to his teammate and Eze takes advantage of the space in front of him while coming up with an impressive finish to give his side the lead at Bayern Munich. The goal did require a VAR check but the Gunners get the all-clear quickly enough.
23' Aston Villa earn a corner and Viking are scrambling in defense, leaving Ross Barkley with a perfect opportunity to score off a header. He's up to three goals this season in the Champions League; before that, he only had one in his career.
15' LASK press Sporting and Kasper Jorgensen combines with Christoph Lang, who wastes no time with an impressive finish to level the score at one. Lang has four goals in his last four games and nabs his first Champions League goal in the process.
10' Arsenal start the game with a pretty notable setback -- Bukayo Saka has to come off for Eberechi Eze with an injury. He and Alphonso Davies both go for the same ball but they barely make contact and Saka appears to come out of it unscathed. He looks pretty awkward as he looks to make the pass and in no time at all, he's receiving medical attention and then comes off the pitch. Understandably, the details of the injury are unclear but his night's done.
5' First goal of the late kickoffs goes Sporting's way, the Lisbon-based side winning a penalty in the early minutes of their game against LASK. Luis Suarez is cool, calm and collected and converts the spotkick with ease, putting his side on course for a third successive win in the Champions League.
Harry Kane and Alphonso Davies headline Bayern Munich's understaffed attack, while Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz do the same for Arsenal. Here's a look at both teams' lineups.
Bayern Munich starting XI: Manuel Neuer, Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Kim Min-jae, Josip Stanisic, Tom Bischof, Aleksandar Pavlovic, Serge Gnabry, Ismael Saibari, Alphonso Davies, Harry Kane
Asrsenal starting XI: David Raya, Jurrien Timber, Ezri Konsa, Gabriel Magalhaes, Riccardo Calafiori, Declan Rice, Bruno Guimaraes, Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Noni Madueke, Kai Havertz
90'+2 Manchester United might get something out of the only dismal trip anyone's ever made to Como, substitute Joshua Zirkzee coming up with a simple finish to make the score 4-1. It's his first goal of the season but naturally, there is not much of a celebration and the home crowd barely even acknowledges the existence of Zirkzee's strike.
76' Make it four for Como! Kaiki Bruno connects with Jacobo Ramon, whose header from close range will serve as the first Champions League goal of his career. It was already an unforgettable night for Como but Ramon's goal is like the cherry on top, forcing serious questions of Manchester United in the process -- their winless run is certain to extend to seven games across all competitions, very clearly trending in the wrong direction once again.
61' Baris Alper Yilmaz connects with Victor Osimhen, who comes up with an impressive finish and finally has the goal many have been waiting for him to score all night. Lille's defense is struggling to keep up with Galatasaray's defense at this point, making things a bit too easy for the visitors so far in this second half. Galatasaray now have a 4-2 lead and maybe, just maybe, are on course for their first points of the Champions League campaign.
