MEX 2-3 ENG (FT)
Down a player, England held off a comeback attempt by Mexico, and move onto the quarterfinals after a 3-2 win in Estadio Azteca.

England cast out their demons in Mexico and finally earned a victory at the Estadio Azteca. In a wild round of 16 match where England played down a man for over 30 minutes, the Three Lions progressed to the World Cup quarterfinals after a 3-2 win, handing Mexico their first-ever loss at home in a World Cup game.
A knockout match that just about had it all for mutuals, including two penalties and one red card, England showed why they are considered contenders. With two goals from Jude Bellingham and one from Harry Kane, England ended Mexico's magical run and extended theirs, and they will now face Norway on July 11 in Miami.
Kane's penalty was his sixth goal of the tournament and puts him firmly in the golden boot race alongside France's Kylian Mbappe, Argentina's Lionel Messi, and Norway's Erling Haaland.
It might not have been perfect; in fact, there was outright calamity, but England handled the Azteca with just the right amount of mental focus and preparedness one could have on a quick turnaround.
The squad was content to play the opening half-hour evenly, splitting possession, time on the ball, and shots on target. They showed part of getting a win in Mexico City was neutralizing the environment as much as they could, and getting into the first hydration break was a first step into kicking the game into a gear they were comfortable with.
Anthony Gordon set the tone, put together an underrated man of the match performance, covering ground that no other Englishman before him could cover at 7,220 feet above sea-level. Declan Rice was in support, launching passes and plucking out Gordon or Bellingham when able, and after the first half hour, it all came together for England with Bellingham's first goal.
Mexico's attempt to calm things down took a more lacksidaicak turn instead of a collected effort and Bellingham had a second goal just 90 seconds later.
Despite the early lead, England's resolve was tested by Mexico's surging efforts to close out the first half, with looks on goal by Raul Jimenez, and eventually a breakthrough by Julian Quinones to bring the game within one. The Three Lions held onto the lead at halftime, thanks to massive saves by Pickford and a goalline clearance by Bellingham, as if an omen of what would come next.
Mexico's efforts to rattle England eventually paid off in other areas. A halftime sub by Javier Agurrire to bring on Edson Alvarez for an injured Cesar Montes, followed by a studs-up tackle by Jarell Quansah on Jesus Gallardo, was deemed a red card offense after VAR review and was a momentum changer for El Tri.
England were down a player before the hour mark, but Mexico failed to capitalize on the advantage, thanks to Gordon's efforts again. The forward sprinted after a long ball through, forcing goalkeeper Tala Rangel to come off his line and make a challenge. The keeper misjudged the run and the ball and took out Gordon's legs. The penalty was awarded to England and Kane scored his sixth goal of the tournament to extend England's lead.
Another impact sub by Mexico for Brian Gutierrez led to a penalty in the box after a foul by Kane, and Jimenez pulled Mexico within one, once more.
The spark of life was just a fleeting moment in the end. While Mexico threw everything they had at England, the earlier mistakes were too many to overcome. England held their nerve, backed by defensive efforts by Pickford, who faced 20 shots from Mexico.
After the final whistle, there was exhaustion and joy for England, and tears and defeat for Mexico.
For El Tri, the tournament is over after four games, and reaching a long, elusive fifth World Cup match comes to an end in the place that was deemed a torture chamber for other teams. England snapped a curse that had haunted them since 1986, a crash out in the Estadio Azteca in the quarterfinal. For all the numbers that showed that nearly no one can beat Mexico in Mexico City, England proved they could do that, too.
Now they head to the quarterfinals in Miami, where they will face Norway, led by golden boot co-leader Erling Haaland
Down a player, England held off a comeback attempt by Mexico, and move onto the quarterfinals after a 3-2 win in Estadio Azteca.
Mexico had England where they wanted them, tired late in the game, and looking for a strike. Unfortunately, El Tri committed too many errors to truly come back from the hole they dug themselves in. Brilliant showing by Gordon, Bellingham, and Kane to keep England alive in the World Cup.
As if this game wasn't already completely nuts, there are now eleven more minutes to either enjoy, or endure.
80' Mexico make ANOTHER change and bring Guillermo Martinez on for Julian Quinones. The shift is notable as a ball whipped in finds Gimenez, but Engand cover the box and clear away any danger.
78' Alvaro Fidalgo comes on for Sanchez ahead of a corner kick for El Tri.
75' Daniel Burn and Djed Spence are on the pitch for O'Reilly and Anderson.

65' The referee has gone to the monitor to see if there was a foul by Kane in the box on Gutierrez.

59' England hit a quick transition, and Gordon is on a sprint after a ball through, and Rangel comes out to challenge but takes out the legs instead. Kane is at the spot to take the penalty..
57' Just when you think one team is running away with the game, the other offers a reminder that nothing is out of reach. England not happy about playing down a man.
54' After a VAR review, Jarell Quansah is issued a red card for a studs up tackle on Gallardo.
49' After spending a few minutes in Mexico's half, England wins a corner and nearly makes them pay as a recycled ball is off the post for the Three Lions after a shot by O'Reiley. Mexico are still struggling to clear out of their half.
It's Edson Alvarez on for Cesar Montes to start the second half. There were some injury concerns over Montes, who was a gametime start, and that'll be it for him after the first half.
45+4' Mexico wins a corner after ANOTHER chance by Raul. He gets a header near the top corner, but Pickford's massive save keeps England's lead, and another clearance following the corner gets the game to halftime.
45+1' Mexico get another good look at the goal. Quinones and Raul nearly combine for another, but Raul's touch is off, and it's just wide of the goal.
It's five minutes of stoppage for the first half, and England is scrambling to get into halftime. The ball hasn't left England's half since Mexico got one back.
43' Mexico generates some chaos off a free kick, and a poor clearance by England ends up at the feet of Quinones for a quick reactive shot. The stadium is back to life.
38' Mexico is completely shell-shocked and immediately concedes another! It's another goal for Jude Bellingham.
36' IT'S JUDE BELLINGHAM TO OPEN THE SCORING! A diving header breaks the deadlock.
32' Mexico do well to carry a spell of possession in the final third, and the ball recycles back to Romo, who opts for a shot from distance -- and it's sky high over the bar. England back on the ball.
30' Not much separating these two teams at the moment. While Mexico has a few more shots than England, both have only one on target. With possession, there is just a 4% difference in favor of El Tri.
26' Gordon is having a great game on the wing. He's back in the mix immediately and hauls endline to win a ball that was surely heading out of play. His cut back is solid, and he gets a shot off, but Rangel is there in position to collect.
23' Even with a weather delay and cooler temperatures, we have our first hydration break of the game. No altitude worries for England at the moment.
20' After a flurry of touches in the final third, England neutralizes the threat, and Rice is back on the other end with Gordon to win a corner. It's sent in, cleared away for a throw-in, and then goes out for a goal kick after a re-entry.
15' Raul is there at the end of the cross into the box, and he makes good contact with a header, but Pickford gets a hand on it, and it's out for a corner. Mexico's service back in is recycled, and El Tri now retains possession.
13' After Mexico tries to break a line with a ball through, Pickford handles the ball with ease, and England builds back up again. A long ball over by Rice to Saka is intercepted before anything dangerous can happen.
8' England finally find some space to work with and get a ball endline, and it's defended away for a corner. Rice is over the flag, but the corner is played short, and the second ball in is out for a Mexico throw-in.
