England survive Norway 2-1 with extra time goal, advance to World Cup semifinals behind Jude Bellingham brace

For the second time in the last three World Cups, England are through to the semifinals. The Three Lions trailed Norway 1-0 in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Miami, but they roared back to level the game on the stroke of halftime and win it in extra time 2-1, with Jude Bellingham scoring both goals.

After his two-goal performance against Mexico in the round of 16, the Real Madrid superstar did it again, popping up at the most opportune times to lift his team into the next round.

Norway took a shock lead in the 36th minute when Andreas Schjelderup, brought into the starting XI, found the net from a tight angle, with his effort, possibly a cross attempt, rattling off the post before going in. England boss Thomas Tuchel and his staff were unhappy about the goal, and captain Harry Kane appealed for a foul in the buildup while the ball hit the back of the net, but the goal stood.

England leveled things up just before the break through Bellingham, as Elliot Anderson found Anthony Gordon, who crossed it in for Bellingham to finish with some sharp movement and clinical finishing. However, the goal possibly sholdn't have stood as replay showed the ball hit the camera cable above the pitch on Orjan Nyland's goal kick just before Bellingham scored, and FIFA rules state it should have been whistled dead for outside interference, but officials missed it in real time, resulting in the 1-1 scoreline at the break.

In the second half, both teams had their chances, though Norway were closest, hitting a header off the crossbar that had Jordan Pickford beat, but as the second half went on, the teams visibly tired in the Miami heat and humidity, sending the game into extra time.

That's when Bellingham did something basic that is often overlooked, following up a shot. And he did, catching Norway's defense sleeping in the 93rd minute, as Morgan Rogers' long shot was misheld by Norway's Nyland, allowing him to slot it home for the would-be winner.

With the result, England will face either Argentina or Switzerland in the second semifinal on Wednesday in Atlanta.

The dream continues

England haven't won this thing since 1966. That's not a typo. Sixty years. Really, it's been 60 years since they've won anything on th senior men's side. An entire English population has been born, grown up, had kids of their own, all without seeing the Three Lions lift a World Cup. So yeah, when Wednesday's semifinal rolls around against whoever survives Argentina-Switzerland, this isn't just another game.

This is the closest England have been to erasing six decades of hurt since Gareth Southgate's side made this same stage back in 2018, only to fall short. Tuchel's group has already matched that. Now it's about going one better and avoiding that gut-wrenching feeling of letting their country down, again. A portion of this England squad have already had their hearts ripped out twice on the big stage. Back-to-back Euro final losses, on penalties to Italy in 2021 and then to Spain in 2024, both absolute gut punches for a country that treats this sport like a religion. So this World Cup semifinal isn't happening in a vacuum. It's happening for a fanbase that's watched their team get agonizingly close over and over, only to come up empty over and over. Win Wednesday, and England are one match from finally, finally putting an end to the wait. Lose, and it's another chapter in the same painful book of shortcomings.

Was the England goal legal?

On top of what we said earlier and on the camera 'deflection' in the build-up to England's goal, FIFA say they have checked the ball heartbeat sensor and there was no spike.

GOAL: Bellingham again!

93' It's 2-1 to England, and once again it's Jude Bellingham who delivers for the Three Lions. Morgan Rogers' initial effort was saved, but the rebound fell kindly to Bellingham, who reacted quickest to smash the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the match. It's a massive moment for England, who have come from behind and are now just minutes away from a place in the World Cup semifinals.

It's extra time!

90 minutes weren't enough to separate these two sides. Despite England creating a handful of dangerous opportunities in the closing stages, they couldn't find the breakthrough, and this World Cup quarterfinal will now be decided in extra time, or penalties...

England's goal under radar

England's equalizer is surrounded by controversy after Norway's goal kick appeared to strike the spider-cam wire suspended above the pitch. The contact altered the ball's trajectory, allowing England to regain possession before Jude Bellingham scored the equalizer. Under the laws of the game, play should be stopped and restarted with a dropped ball if the ball touches an outside agent such as a suspended camera system.

Norway goal ruled out

55' Norway thought they had restored their lead as Heggem found the back of the net, but the celebrations were short-lived. After a brief check, the goal was ruled out for offside, keeping the score level at 1-1.

HT: Norway 1, England 1

45' The teams head into the break level after a dramatic end to the first half. Kane thought he had given England the lead with what would have been their second goal, but the flag went up for offside, keeping the score at 1-1. The match came to life just before halftime as Schjelderup put Norway ahead, only for Bellingham to respond moments later with a well-taken equalizer. After a quiet start, the quarterfinal is finally living up to the hype.

GOAL: Bellingham makes it 1-1

45' Jude Bellingham brings England back into the match with a brilliant finish to make it 1-1. Gordon does superbly to pick out the midfielder inside the box, and Bellingham takes full advantage, finding the space before calmly firing past the goalkeeper. It's 1-1 now!

Norway pushing again

40' It wasn't the most entertaining first half of the World Cup but Norway looked much better after the hydration break and had another opportunity after scoring the opening goal of the game in Miami.

GOAL: Norway score!

35' It's 1-0 to Norway, and it's Andreas Schjelderup who breaks the deadlock in Miami! The Benfica winger let fly from inside the box with what initially looked like a cross, but the ball caught everyone by surprise and nestled into the far corner of the net. Whether it was intentional or not, Norway won't care!

Not the best start

15' It's been a slow start at Hard Rock Stadium, with neither side managing a shot on target so far. England have enjoyed the majority of the possession but have yet to turn that control into chances, while Norway have stayed organized defensively and looked comfortable without the ball.

How they got here

England reached the quarterfinals after winning Group L, finishing ahead of Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. The Three Lions then defeated DR Congo 2-1 in the Round of 32 before winning 3-2 against Mexico in the round of 16. Norway advanced as the Group I runners-up behind France, qualifying ahead of Senegal and Iraq. Their knockout run included a 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast in the round of 32, followed by a shocking 2-1 win against Brazil thanks to a brace scored by Erling Haaland.

The last meeting

England and Norway meet in the World Cup for the first time. It will be the 13th meeting overall, with England holding the edge at 7 wins, 3 draws, and 2 losses. Their most recent encounter came in a 2014 friendly at Wembley Stadium, where England claimed a 1-0 victory thanks to the penalty scored by Wayne Rooney. Since then, things have drastically changed for the Norwegian national team as a new generation of players that shaped the nation's most recent history and included players such as Martin Odegaard and most notably Erling Haaland have arrived to lead the team.
