PSG win back-to-back Champions League finals, downing Arsenal on penalties to lift Europe's biggest prize

PSG are the undisputed kings of Europe, winning Saturday's Champions League final in penalty kicks, 4-3. It's a historic victory as PSG have become the first team since Real Madrid won three in a row from 2014- 2017 to go back-to-back in the competition. They'll still need one more title next season to match Zinedine Zidane's Madrid sides, but this is the start of a budding dynasty.

Thirty minutes of extra time couldn't bring a winner, leading to the spot kicks, with Gabriel missing the fifth and final attempt for Arsenal to end a gripping affair. In the penalties, Eberechi Eze missed wide on Arsenal's second attempt, but David Raya stopped Nuno Mendes on PSG's third attempt, allowing Declan Rice to convert his team's third, keeping the English club in it.

Regulation got started with a bang as Kai Havertz got loose at midfield, marched down the field to scoop up a deflected ball, and went powerful and high at the near post for the opening goal, marking his second goal in a UCL final after bagging the winner for Chelsea vs. Manchester City in 2021.

The Gunners, the best defensive team in Europe, put together a fantastic 90 minutes protecting their goal with several impressive slide tackles, but a penalty kick in the 64th minute allowed PSG to draw level. After Cristhian Mosquera brought down Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the box, Ousmane Dembele scored from the spot to draw it level, leading to the tense extra-time period.

That tackle was the only defensive step that the Gunners put wrong during the entire match, but at this level, all it takes is one wrong step. Kvaratskhelia was marked out of the tie, only taking one shot, but when he had a chance to get free on a dribble, he did what he needed to do to draw a penalty. While Arsenal did get off to a fast start, that dynamism was something that they couldn't match on the attacking end.

Once the match opened up, it felt as if PSG would be the side to find a winner before Dembele had to leave the match due to injury, but even when extra time devolved into chaos, they were able to keep their cool and outlast Arsenal in the penalty shootout. Both sides ended with unconventional takers having defenders as their fifth men up to take, but the ball broke PSG's way, and Arsenal's season couldn't end on a high note.

After already winning the Premier League, the Gunners may not have been able to secure their first Champions League title in club history, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a successful season. Securing their first Premier League title since the 2003-04 season, Mikel Arteta does have plenty to build upon in an ever-shifting Premier League.

Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea will all have new managers coming into the new season, and if Arsenal can build upon what they've done, there's no reason that they can't retain the Premier League title and make their way back to being contenders for the Champions League title yet again.

PSG 1, Arsenal 1 (PSG wins 4-3 on penalties)

PSG have done it after two Arsenal misses in penalties were just enough to get by after Lucas Beraldo's make. It was a hard-fought match, but we're now in a situation where we can begin to ponder the dynasty potential of  Luis Enrique's side.

Let's take a look back at the goals:

6' - it's Kai Havertz for Arsenal! He's scored in a final before and he's back to it before even taking four touches in the game!

65' - After a rash challenge by Mosquera. Dembele sends Raya the wrong way to bring the match level. We've got a game here.

Breaking what they thought could happen

"Back to back like this, we never thought [It would happen], but we worked, and I think we deserve it. If you watch, we were the best game on the pitch," Vitinha said.

It's an impressive feat, and Vitinha was at the middle of all of it for his club. He immediately wanted to talk about the team and what they did together. Vitinha described Luis Enrique as the main character of the team, and that's one of the things that makes PSG just so special.

Gabriel's miss takes nothing away from his game

Arsenal didn't put a step wrong defensively, but sometimes the ball doesn't go your way.

Look at that trophy lift

It's clear that PSG have forged a unit under Luis Enrique, and the joy around them all is clear as they lift their manager in celebration. It's special stuff.

We have a trophy lift coming soon

This will certainly be just as sweet for PSG as last season, as they're entering rare territory going back-to-back winning the Champions League before most members of the team fly out to begin World Cup preparations.

Keeping it unconventional, Gabriel is Arsenal's fifth taker, and he shoots it way over the bar, giving PSG their second consecutive UCL title.

We have penalties

For the first time since 2016, a Champions League final will be decided by a penalty shootout. This will be quite a match as both sides are on even footing, but it will come down to mentality and the goalkeepers' form here.

Running out of time

Just 12 minutes of soccer remain. Arsenal have a free kick that Declan Rice will deliver into the box, but it was well handled as PSG will go back on the offensive in the match. The pace has slowed down, but this is still anyone's game.

Boos are raining down

Arsenal fans wanted a penalty when Noni Madueke went down in the box, but it was a good no-call on that occasion. We'll go to the second period of extra time as this tie continues on. Players are leaving it all on the pitch, but PSG have subs left, and this is the time to make them.

What has happened to PSG

The champs are getting weirdly sloppy right now. The one thing you wouldn't expect from them is passes going astray and moves that meander to nowhere but that's what we're getting. Arsenal, meanwhile, just don't have the technical authority at the top end of the pitch to exploit this weird set of events.

More changes for Arsenal

They received an extra sub for extra time, and Eberechi Eze and Martin Zubimendi will enter for Myles Lewis-Skelly and Kai Havertz, giving Mikel Arteta his XI for the remainder of the game. PSG still has four subs available at this stage so there could be more changes to come.

Free soccer in Budapest

The full-time whistle has blown, and Bradley Barcola's shot couldn't find the net, so we'll have two periods of extra time followed by penalties if needed. This has been a serious chess match, and it's only fitting that it will continue.

Wrong side of the netting

It's another PSG chance, this one by Vitinha as we're inching into stoppage time in Budapest. There will be more stoppage time in the clash, but we're set for 30 more minutes of soccer as things stand.

PSG make their first change

And it's a big one from Luis Enrique. Khvich Kvaraskelia has been mostly anonymous in the match outside of drawing the penalty to bring PSG level, but Bradley Barcola will enter. With his first touch of the game, Barcola was almost in on goal, but it was picked off his feet by David Raya in excellent goalkeeping.

What's next?

Suddenly, this feels like PSG's game to lose. It's opening up, and with it, so are counterattacks. Arsenal clearly don't want to play for extra time, which favors the depth of PSG, and they've made two subs so far, with Viktor Gyokeres also entering. Arsenal have come out of their shell, but now PSG have taken five shots to their one in the second half. 10 minutes remain for one of those to find the back of the net as Arsenal readies more changes.

You can only hold PSG down for so long

Arsenal have been excellent in their individual duels, but when PSG are controlling so much possession, it's only a matter of time until it leads to a mistake being made. Mosquera is now out of the match with Jurrien Timber looking to settle the match down, but momentum is now on PSG's side in the clash.

Didn't take as long fro PSG's second shot on target

They were able to get their first shot on target in the second half much earlier than in the first, but unfortunately, it was a tame free kick from Achraf Hakimi. It's a better start, and now two Arsenal players are on yellow cards in the early going of the half. This will be quite a finish in Budapest.

First yellow of the game

Cristhian Mosquera has been booked, and as he's tasked with defending Kvaratskhelia, that will be something to watch as Arteta may want to make a change around 60 minutes or so.
