St. Louis City SC have their first trophy, and they had to survive losing their star goalkeeper, getting bombarded with chances and a penalty shootout over the Columbus Crew to get it. The Crew controlled Wednesday's U.S. Open Cup final at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field and created chance after chance but never found a winner. St. Louis took the shootout 5-3 to lift silverware in only their fourth season. The win caps a landmark first year for head coach Yoann Damet, a former Crew assistant who beat his old club on its own field.
Starting goalkeeper Roman Burki suffered a head injury and was transported to a local hospital. According to CBS Sports sideline reporter Hailey Sutton, Burki was conscious and had movement in all of his extremities.
Benjamin Lundt, the backup goalkeeper, jumped in and made a cruciual save in the shootout to help his team to the title.
With the win, they also earn a 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup berth. This was the first U.S. Open Cup final to go to penalty kicks since 2015.
