Valentina Shevchenko's injury opened the door for a new woman to grab the women's flyweight championship, and Natalia Silva ran through that door on Saturday, defeating Wang Cong to claim the title in the main event of UFC 332 in Salt Lake City.
Silva had already earned a shot at the title with three straight wins over former UFC champions, and when Shevchenko vacated the belt, Wang was the woman tapped by the UFC to make up the other half of a championship contest.
That pairing was one pitting Silva's constant movement and befuddling striking style with Wang's more powerful approach to the stand-up game. As had been the case for many talented fighters in previous fights, Silva's unique style was a puzzle Wang could not solve until it was too late.
Silva picked Wang apart in the early rounds, dipping in and out with quick combinations of punches and kicks to the legs, body and head. With Silva's movement and speed clicking, Wang struggled to find places to sit down on her own shots and use her size and power to dictate the terms of the fight.
By the time Wang fully got into her own offensive flow, she needed a stoppage to get the victory. Wang nearly got there in the fifth round, finally pressuring Silva and landing powerful shots that seemed to have Silva significantly hurt at least twice.
Silva was able to survive the late scare, and there wasn't much doubt who would have their hand raised when the official scorecards were read. And those scorecards read 48-47, 48-47 and 49-46, all for Silva, who became UFC champion for the first time in her career.
"I knew she was a tough fighter," Silva said after the fight. "A lot of people talked about that she was in this fight, but this fight proved why she was challenging me. She's an amazing athlete. This is the beginning of the time of Natalia Silva. I'm the new queen."
Silva is now 9-0 in her UFC career, and her style will make her a tough out for any potential challenger, including Shevchenko should that day ever come.
