Ten ACC teams have had at least one scrimmage this preseason, with Maryland and Virginia Tech getting into the action this weekend. Here’s a look at how things went:
Taking contact: Thursday’s scrimmage at Florida State was the first time RB Chris Thompson had taken hits in a game since breaking two vertebrae in a game last October. DB Karlos Williams laid the first hit on Thompson in the scrimmage, and after being tackled a few times, Thompson is now all the way back from his injury.
Freshmen to watch: Wake Forest WR Sherman Ragland III had a game-high 56 yards receiving and one touchdown. Miami RB Duke Johnson had 49 rushing yards, ran for three TDs and took a screen pass 37 yards for another. Duke S Dwayne Norman returned an interception off Sean Renfree 55 yards for a TD. Florida State CB Ronald Darby impressed coaches with his performance and is competing with Nick Waisome to replace Greg Reid.
Injury bug: RB Rolandan Finch starred in Boston College's first scrimmage, but he became the latest Eagle to go down with a foot injury in the second. Finch hurt his left foot after taking a hit while scoring a TD, and joined TE Chris Pantale and CB Al Louis-Jean with foot injuries this preseason.
QB battles: Stephen Morris was named the starter ahead of Ryan Williams after Miami's scrimmage. Virginia coach Mike London said the Cavaliers’ depth chart was unchanged after their scrimmage -- with Michael Rocco still leading Phillip Sims.
Defense leads offense: Clemson had six interceptions in its first scrimmage, led by S Rashard Hall's three. NC State didn’t release individual statistics from its scrimmage, but the defense recorded nine sacks and held QBs to 14 of 38 passing and RBs to 1.9 yards per carry.
Offense leads defense: Georgia Tech had three long scoring drives, which produced two touchdowns and a field goal in its first scrimmage. North Carolina also didn’t release statistics from its closed scrimmage, but the team posted a highlight video on its website that showed quarterbacks gashing the defense for several long passes. RB Giovanni Bernard and QB Bryn Renner added rushing touchdowns.
