Boston College CB Louis-Jean out with foot injury

Coach Frank Spaziani announced Tuesday that sophomore cornerback Al Louis-Jean Jr. hurt his left foot and will miss “several games.”

Louis-Jean played in 10 games last year with 15 tackles and one interception. He was a projected starter at a position that does not have much depth. Sophomore C.J. Jones will fill in for Louis-Jean. Jones appeared in two games last year before suffering a season-ending knee injury at Central Florida.

The Eagles also announced that tight end Chris Pantale underwent successful surgery on Monday to fix a broken bone in his right foot. Pantale, who was elected a team captain this season, is expected to miss eight weeks.

Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Al Groh not happy with Tuesday’s practice

Groh was not happy with how his unit practiced on Tuesday, according to a practice report issued by the school.

“I hope that’s not our best,” Groh told reporters. “We didn’t make progress. You have to keep moving forward. Even if you stall, you’re losing ground. There were some individual players [who made progress], but not enough. This was the first day of concern. Those things occur in camp, but you can’t accept it.”

This is Groh’s third year in Atlanta, and he believes that his unit will make a significant jump in 2012. The Yellow Jackets finished No. 43 nationally in total defense last year (359.3 yards per game) and No. 60 in scoring defense (26.1 points per game).

“Our talent level is such that we have to play with an efficiency and a toughness and an effort level that makes anybody who watches kind of lose their breath,” Groh said. “That’s what it’s going to take to maximize what we have. It was just too inconsistent today.”

Virginia Tech DT Maddy continues to impress

Sophomore defensive tackle Luther Maddy appears to have picked up where he left off in the spring when he was named the defense’s most valuable player. This from Andy Bitter of the Roanoke Times:

Maddy surprised both coaches and fans contributing as a true freshman last year. He played in 13 games and had 19 tackles with two tackles for loss.

Senior Antoine Hopkins missed the last nine games of 2011 with an ACL injury. Hopkins was also limited in spring practice, and Maddy has made the most of his opportunity. Right now, it looks as if Maddy will be starting alongside junior defensive tackle Derrick Hopkins, Antoine’s younger brother, in the Sept. 3 opener against Georgia Tech.
