As part of our weekly prep for Big Ten on CBS, I chat with one of the stars of the games ahead of time. This week's conversation was with Purdue second-year quarterback Hudson Card, who has a great backstory as a Texas native who was once considered the Longhorns' QB of the future before ending up in West Lafayette, with a little help from Drew Brees, who has a similar backstory.
Here's a portion of the interview. You can catch the rest on CBS throughout the day: Pregame show Inside College Football and then during the broadcast of No. 18 Notre Dame at Purdue on CBS Sports at 3:30 p.m. ET.
CBS: Explain to us the magic of Friday Night Lights.
Card: "Everything is bigger in Texas, especially when it comes to high school football. I was blessed to go to Lake Travis, which is a great program. They paved for me the way they practice and played. It sets you up for the next level."
CBS: You were a dual-threat at Lake Travis. You played quarterback, but you also played a little receiver while you were preparing to be a QB. We've seen your talent under center, how would you grade yourself as a receiver?
Card: "I really enjoyed playing receiver. It was different for me, something new. It was really fun. I played with Garrett Wilson so they'd always double him and I was left alone on an island, so I probably got more balls than I should have. It was a great experience and allowed me to see the field with a different viewpoint, which I think was good for you as well."
CBS: When you transferring after your Texas career, you had a FaceTime call that helped seal the deal on your next destination. Who did you talk to and what did they say?
Card: I talked to Drew Brees. Him coming from Westlake and I'm from Lake Travis, our two high schools were rivals so it was pretty interesting because Brees could not only talk about his experience at Purdue but he lived right around the corner from where I did. So it was pretty similar journeys in some ways. He joked about Westlake and Lake Travis, which was funny, but ultimately hearing his story and how Purdue treated him and how that experience was moving from Austin to Indiana, but it was definitely a cool experience and cool phone call."
