Week 1 of the 2024 college football season got off to a hot start Thursday night, with several games that came down to the wire and a couple of major underdogs that came close to monumental upsets. No result was more surprising than No. 24 NC State's 38-21 win against Western Carolina, which was more competitive than the final score may indicate.
The Catamounts led 21-17 entering the third quarter but didn't have the depth to bring the game home, as the Wolfpack surged for 21 unanswered points over the final 15 minutes. Credit to NC State quarterback Grayson McCall, who shook off a rough start to make some big throws in the fourth quarter -- including the 35-yard strike to wide receiver Kevin Concepcion that gave the Wolfpack their decisive lead.
Colorado also got everything it could handle from a tough North Dakota State squad. The Buffaloes eked out a 31-26 win as NDSU's last-second Hail Mary attempt was completed just short of the goal line. Quarterback Shedeur Sanders and wide receiver Travis Hunter connected for three of Colorado's four touchdowns.
As if that wasn't enough excitement for one brief evening window, North Carolina's defense buckled down in the final moments to protect a 19-17 lead to score a huge non-conference victory. The Golden Gophers had a chance to win it as time expired, but kicker Dragan Kesich's 47-yard kick sailed wide right.
While those three games were back-and-forth affairs, a pair of SEC schools took all the drama out of their contests early. Arkansas crushed Arkansas Pine Bluff 70-0 and No. 11 Missouri beat Murray State 51-0.
