Coach Jimbo Fisher and Florida State have not shied away from the lofty preseason expectations. Almost everything seems to be in place for the Seminoles to make a run at a national championship, but there are a few positions that are up for grabs during preseason camp. Here are three position battles to keep an eye on:
- Safety: The Seminoles need to figure out who will start alongside Lamarcus Joyner at safety. Junior Terrence Brooks seems to be the favorite to win the job. Brooks is versatile and played in dime situations in 2011. Sophomore Karlos Williams (6-1, 230 pounds) has defensive back speed at linebacker size and could win the job if he masters the scheme of defensive coordinator Mark Stoops.
- Right tackle: Junior Bryan Stork and sophomore Bobby Hart will compete throughout the preseason to see who will be the starter at right tackle. Stork (6-4, 312 pounds) started 10 games last year and played in 12 at center. He moved to tackle in the spring and really pushed Hart. Hart (6-4, 316 pounds) started the final nine games at right tackle for Florida State in 2011 at the age of 17.
- Cornerback: With the dismissal of cornerback Greg Reid, the Seminoles need to figure out who will start opposite Xavier Rhodes at the field cornerback position. Nick Waisome, Keelin Smith and Tyler Hunter are all second-year players who could fill the void. Waisome put on weight during the offseason, and Hunter is versatile enough. Smith is the back-up to Rhodes at the boundary cornerback position.
