LSU quarterback Myles Brennan is exiting the transfer portal in the same place from which he entered it. Brennan announced on Twitter Thursday that he will return to Baton Rouge and play for new head coach Brian Kelly and the Tigers in 2022. Kelly spoke with Brennan about returning, giving the signal-caller a few days to make a decision, according to Sports Illustrated's Ross Dellenger.
Brennan suffered an arm injury ahead of fall practice that's prevented him from seeing the field in 2021. That handed the starting job to Max Johnson, who threw for 2,814 yards and 27 touchdowns this season. However, Johnson announced last week that he would enter the transfer portal after Kelly was hired.
After initially entering the portal in November, it isn't too much of a stretch to assume that Brennan's decision to return to the Tigers had something to do with Johnson's decision to leave.
A 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior from Long Beach, Mississippi, Brennan threw for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns in three games in 2020 before tearing abdominal muscles and ligaments in the 45-41 loss to Missouri. Despite suffering the injuries during the game, Brennan threw for 430 yards and four touchdowns.
Brennan threw for 182 yards as a freshman in 2017 and redshirted in 2018. He served as Joe Burrow's primary backup during the 2019 national title run, throwing for 353 yards and one score.
A four-star prospect and the No. 152 overall player in the Class of 2017, Brennan will have one year of eligibility remaining due to the free year of eligibility the NCAA granted players during the pandemic year of 2020. He will compete with sophomore Garrett Nussmeier and incoming freshman Walker Howard for the starting gig in Baton Rouge.
