This week, Maryland became the latest school to reach down under for kicking needs on special teams.
Brad Craddock, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound punter and kicker from Adelaide, Australia, signed a financial-aid agreement and will join the Terps football program for the 2012 season.
"Brad is an extremely talented kicker and punter with a very strong leg and excellent hang time and distance with his kicks,” Edsall said in the official release. “We are excited that Brad has decided to come to the University of Maryland to continue his academic and athletic career.
"Having had experience with an Australian punter previously, I felt that Brad would be a great fit based on film and recommendations of our kicking and International contacts. We look forward to having Brad with us when our team reports to camp on August 5th."
Craddock will have four years of eligibility when he arrives at Maryland, and will compete with senior Nick Ferrara, sophomore Michael Tart, and redshirt freshman Nathan Renfro for time on the field. Ferrara was the primary kicker (going 12-for-20 on field goals and 27-for-28 on extra point attempts) and punter (57 punts, 39.5-yard average) for the Terps in 2011. Tart was the only other specialist used in a kicking situation.
Maryland fans are likely hoping that Craddock, one of the top rated Australian kicking prospects for 2012, will have a similar impact to fellow Australian Brad Wing - LSU's All-SEC kicker in 2011.
If he does, we can only hope that he brings similar swagger as well.
