Sadly as it does every year, Week 1 of the college football season has brought back the injury bug. For Maryland, that means quarterback Tyrrell Pigrome.
Terps coach D.J. Durkin confirmed on Tuesday during his weekly press conference that Pigrome is out for the season with an ACL tear he sustained during Saturday's 51-41 win over Texas. The injury occurred in the second half of the game during a scramble when Pigrome attempted to evade a defender. Instead, Pigrome planted awkwardly and crumbled to the turf. He had to be assisted off the field.
Durkin also announced defensive end Jesse Aniebonam was out "several months" with an ankle injury. Both losses are significant as Aniebonam led the team with nine sacks a season ago.
True freshman Kasim Hill, whom Pigrome beat out for the starting job in preseason camp, finished the game against Texas and kept the offense moving by going 3 of 3 through the air, including an important 3rd-and-19 conversion, and adding 14 yards on the ground.
Hill was a four-star member of Maryland's 2017 recruiting class, per 247Sports, and was considered a potential future face of the program. Barring a surprise between now and the start of Week 2, that future will start sooner rather than later.
"Yeah, there wasn't an ounce of doubt. I mean, that's how he's been since the day he got here," Durkin said about playing Hill after the game via the Baltimore Sun. "It's just him. He's got that way about him; he's got that 'it' factor about him, for sure."
