Michigan vs. Oklahoma live updates: No. 11 Sooners go on the road to face Wolverines in SEC-Big Ten clash

Start of 4Q: Michigan 10, Oklahoma 7

The Sooners will start the fourth quarter in Michigan territory following a 43-yard catch-and-run from tight end Rocky Beers. Beers had a double move on a linebacker and made the most of his reception over the middle. Beers has five catches for 91 yards.

The Wolverines had a chance to add to their lead at Oklahoma's 31-yard line late in the third, but Reggie Powers III sacked Bryce Underwood on a pivotal 3rd-and-7 situation to take Michigan out of field goal range.

After leaving Saturday's game in the first quarter on Oklahoma's first defensive possession before returning the next series, Oklahoma linebacker Kip Lewis is now in street clothes and out for the rest of the game with a knee injury.

Lewis had a sleeve and brace on his right knee in the first half and did not register any statistics before leaving for the remainder of the contest. It was reported during the broadcast that Lewis told Oklahoma's team trainer that something "didn't feel right" in his knee.

Lewis notched 76 stops last fall as Oklahoma's second-leading tackler.

Mid 3Q: Michigan 10, Oklahoma 7

John Mateer's 22-yard touchdown pass to Mackenzie Alleyne has finally put the Sooners in the end zone against Michigan, capping an eight-play, 90-yard drive for Oklahoma's first points.

There was a miscommunication in the secondary for Michigan and Mateer responded with his best throw of the afternoon to a wide open Alleyne. After six empty possessions, Oklahoma's offense found its rhythm for the first time in the third quarter and now, the pressure is on the Wolverines to answer on their next possession.

Early 3Q: Michigan 10, Oklahoma 0

Can Ben Arbuckle and John Mateer get something going for this Oklahoma offense? After a frustrating first half for the Sooners, they'll have to start from their own 10-yard line here in the third quarter following a holding penalty on a punt return.

Mateer was sacked twice and hurried nine times in the opening half as the Sooners struggled to find explosive plays against a Michigan front that has looked the part these last two weeks.

With a win in this one, the Wolverines should vault back into the top-25 after falling out last week following their win over Western Michigan on a Hail Mary.

HALF: Michigan 10, Oklahoma 0

What a difference a week has made for Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood.

After his status as the Wolverines' starter was questioned throughout the week, Underwood's 38-yard touchdown run and ability to keep his offense on schedule have Michigan two quarters away from its first win over a nationally ranked opponent since the 2024 season.

Underwood's keeper through the heart of Oklahoma's defense late in the first quarter pushed the Wolverines ahead, 7-0, the longest run of his career and a play that gave the sophomore a much-needed boost in confidence given last week's follies against Western Michigan.

Michigan already has nine hurries and two sacks of Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, who beat the Wolverines in this matchup last season with 344 total yards of offense and three touchdowns. This time around, Michigan has dominated at the point of attack and held Mateer in check (73 total yards).

"So far, good stuff," Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham said. "We're playing the run well. Good first half, but we've got more in the tank."

Oklahoma is 1-14 when trailing by 10 or more points under Brent Venables. Michigan has won a FBS-leading 45 straight games when leading at halftime. Since 2014, Michigan's 32-0 when shutting out its opponent in the first half.

Late 2Q: Michigan 10, Oklahoma 0

The Wolverines' drive stalled out just outside the red zone, but Michigan did successfully make it a two-score game against the 11th-ranked Sooners with Trey Butkowski's 40-yard boot. The Wolverines have forced the game's only turnover and have dominated the clock, the exact recipe Kyle Whittingham wants to see from his team as an underdog in Week 2.

Mid 2Q: Michigan 7, Oklahoma 0

Five-star Michigan freshman running back has made his presence felt with three receptions for 41 yards in the first half, including a 19-yard snare to give the Wolverines a first down at Oklahoma's 42-yard line with 6:18 to go in the second quarter. Hiter had five rushing attempts for 15 yards in last week's opener and his only catch lost yardage.

Michigan's OC Jason Beck has line Hiter up wide several times Saturday against the Sooners and his ability to find open space is noticeable. Hiter's a Virginia native and was the second-ranked running back this cycle, per 247Sports.

Mid 2Q: Michigan 7, Oklahoma 0

Despite pushing to Oklahoma's 38-yard line after recovering a fumble near midfield, Michigan was forced to punt. Cam Brown's 39-yard punt was downed at the 1-yard line, flipping the field and bringing the Wolverines' defense back on the field.

Oklahoma's offense is back for its third possession after managing just 84 total yards and five first downs up to this point. Mateer and the Sooners can't find their rhythm against a defense that, thus far, has controlled the line of scrimmage.

Early 2Q: Michigan 7, Oklahoma 0

For the third time in the first half, the SEC officiating crew working Saturday's game in Ann Arbor is going to the replay tent.

After a targeting call was picked up in the first quarter and a John Mateer incomplete pass that appeared to be a fumble forced by Michigan's Dom Nichols was upheld, officials are now looking at a fumble by Sooners wideout Parker Livingstone.

Before Livingstone's fumble that was recovered by Michigan, Nichols applied pressure to Mateer's blindside and appeared to dislodge the football. However, it was ruled the quarterback's arm was coming forward, thus incomplete.

The fumble recovery by Michigan was upheld and the Wolverines have forced the game's first takeaway.

End 1Q: Michigan 7, Oklahoma 0

Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood was the top player in the 2025 recruiting cycle for a reason.

The sophomore signal caller scored on a 38-yard keeper late in the first quarter to push the Wolverines ahead of 11th-ranked Oklahoma. Underwood capped a six play, 91-yard drive with the longest run of his career.

The Big House has come alive.

After leaving Oklahoma's first defensive possession with a lower leg situation, Sooners linebacker Kip Lewis is back in the game with a brace on his right knee. According to the broadcast, Lewis was overheard telling team trainers his knee "didn't feel right", but he's back in the game and giving it a go.  

Lewis started every game last season, accumulating 76 tackles (including 10.5 TFLs). The fifth-year starter is making his 31st career start for the Sooners.

Late 1Q: Oklahoma 0, Michigan 0

Two possessions, two punts for Oklahoma.

Michigan's only rushing three and continues to get pressure on Sooners quarterback John Mateer, who's being forced to throw into tight windows early. The Wolverines are playing man coverage on the outside and dropping multiple defenders into coverage, frustrating the Oklahoma passing game.

Mateer appeared to have daylight during an 12-yard first down run during the drive, but cut up field and was tackled despite having a lane to the sideline. Three plays later, the Sooners were backed up and were forced to punt.

Oklahoma linebacker Kip Lewis, the Sooners' second-leading tackler last season, exited the game on Michigan's first possession with a lower leg injury. He's being treated by trainers on the sideline and appears to be stretching his leg in hopes of returning. He's one of the team's leaders on his side of the football and a veteran Brent Venables trusts in the middle of his unit.

Mid 1Q: Oklahoma 0, Michigan 0

Facing a 3rd-and-19 from midfield following a hold penalty that erased a first down inside Oklahoma's 25-yard line, Michigan played it safe on a draw play to Savion Hiter before playing the field position game here in the first quarter on its first possession.

The Sooners will have it at their own 11 to open their second drive looking for the game's first points after a sack ended their opening script.

One observation midway through the first quarter? Michigan heard the noise coming into this game following last week's narrow win over Western Michigan that pushed the Wolverines outside of the national rankings.

Michigan is making a clear point to get its quarterback in space early against Oklahoma. Underwood has moved the chains with his arm and feet on the Wolverines' first possession. Michigan also benefited from a defensive pass interference on third down to open. 

Utah transfer John Henry Daley snuffed out Oklahoma's first possession with a third-down sack as the pocket crumbled around Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer.

The Wolverines were in business inside Oklahoma's 20-yard line midway through the first before a holding call brought back a chunk play from Savion Hiter.

Michigan coach Kyle Whittingham is rolling with Bryce Underwood as his starting quarterback against Oklahoma, but there's no guarantee he'll finish Saturday's game as such.

Whittingham warned this week that the Wolverines' QB1 position is not set in stone and Underwood's being evaluated like every player after a disappointing Week 1 performance during a last-second win over Western Michigan.

"He's our quarterback right now. It's not something that's infinite," Whittingham said Monday. "We need to see improvement with a bunch of stuff… it's not just Bryce's job that's set in concrete. Nobody's job is."

Underwood, who finished with a 52.9 QBR last week, was asked the following day about Whittingham's not-so-glowing review. He has started every game for the Wolverines since stepping on campus in the spring of 2025 as a five-star freshman rated as the nation's No. 1 recruit.

"There was comments about that?" Underwood said. "That's cool. I didn't see that."

Pressed for a reaction, Underwood downplayed the situation again.

"It's cool."

Michigan was miserable offensively in the opener, finishing with 12 first downs and 276 total yards — 47 of those coming on Underwood's game-winning Hail Mary as time expired to JJ Buchanan.

He didn't look comfortable in Jason Beck's offensive scheme and the matchup with Oklahoma is a cause for concern. The Sooners limited the Wolverines to 13 points in last year's meeting, suffocating Underwood and an offense that improved as the season matured.

Underwood's backup is four-star freshman Tommy Carr, who performed well in Michigan's spring game, but did not play last week.

The 11th-ranked Sooners are a 5.5-point favorite on the road against the Wolverines, who dropped out of the top-25 last week following an unimpressive 13-12 win over Western Michigan. A pivotal non-conference showdown for two programs with College Football Playoff aspirations, the road only gets tougher from here for each in the SEC and Big Ten, respectively.
