NCAA transfer portal 2025: Live updates, college football transfer tracker, news powered by 247Sports

The NCAA transfer portal cycle for the 2025 college football season officially opened Monday, Dec. 9 and will close on Saturday, Dec. 28. Though some players have announced their intentions to transfer prior to Monday, they could not officially enter the portal until it opened.

Given that thousands of FBS players enter the portal each cycle and NIL has become a differentiating factor in player acquisition, expect to see plenty of movement this offseason in what has become one of the most important periods on the college football calendar.

In addition to the notable transfer players that will be listed below as the process continues over the next month, keep it locked here as CBS Sports and 247Sports cover the transfer portal window from top to bottom with a live tracker, updated rankings and much more. Some will-they, won't-they names of intrigue

I just posted a VIP piece for 247Sports subscribers breaking down the latest on players who have announced for the portal and some who the industry is watching as possible targets. I'm sure it will get aggregated that one of the names included in the "players to watch" section is Nebraska QB Dylan Raiola, who just polished off his freshman campaign. The former 5-star recruit is a name multiple sources are pointing to as one to keep an eye on.

Some other big-name QBs included in the piece:

  • John Mateer, Washington State
  • Cameron Rising, Utah
  • Kyron Drones, Virginia Tech

In all, there are updates on 13 college football players. Check it out here

Ohio State backup QB Devin Brown entering portal

Longtime Buckeye backup QB Devin Brown announced Sunday night he'd be entering the transfer portal but would remain with the team through Ohio State's College Football Playoff run. The Buckeyes play Dec. 21 against Tennessee in the No. 8 vs. No. 9 game.

Brown has been with the Buckeyes for the last three years. He has been in the competition for the starting quarterback job the last two seasons (vs. Kyle McCord and then vs. Will Howard), but has not won the position.

Brown, a four-star prospect from Corner Canyon High School in Draper, Utah, arrived at Ohio State as part of the 2022 class. He was ranked as the No. 5 quarterback and a top 50 overall player according to the 247Sports rankings.

Here's what he posted on social media.

After many long conversations with my family and careful consideration of my future, I have decided to enter the transfer portal following this season. I am beyond grateful for my time at Ohio State. It has truly been an honor to wear the Scarlet and Gray. The memories and lifelong relationships I have formed here will always be cherished. I want to extend my sincere thanks to Coach Day and all the coaches who have supported me during my time in Columbus. I entered this season with the intent of doing everything I could to win a National Championship with my brothers, and that goal is still very much alive. I will remain with the team and honor my commitment for the remainder of the season as we pursue our goal of winning it all.

The transfer portal is OPEN

Today is Dec. 9, which means college football's winter transfer portal window is open until Dec. 28 (with the exception of playoff teams). You have likely seen a ton of transfer news the last few weeks as players and agents announce their intent and thumb their nose at a mostly-powerless NCAA. But today the portal is officially open, which means you'll see a crush of new entries and schools begin to -- officially -- contact players.

It's the first portal cycle in which schools are attempting to budget and acquire players based on projected revenue-sharing numbers (many college football programs will have $12-plus million budgets) that aren't set because the House Settlement, a multi-billion-dollar agreement between the NCAA and former players, won't be up for final approval until April.

The House Settlement also means a change in scholarship numbers (from 85 to 105) and reduction in roster sizes (from 120 to 105).

But that doesn't mean player movement won't happen! More than 3,800 FBS players entered the portal last cycle, and thousands more will do so again as teams attempt to reset their rosters.

The portal is no longer a novelty. It's a proven roster-building strategy. Every Power Four program, sans Clemson, took at least four transfers last cycle while 56 of them took nine or more.

So, how do teams prepare?

247Sports anonymously surveyed 10 directors of player personnel, directors of scouting or general managers across the FBS -- eight from the Power Four and two from the Group of Five -- to get a sense of how teams view the upcoming portal cycle.
