Pac-12 Notebook: USC RB Silas Redd's value already apparent to Lane Kiffin

USC coach Lane Kiffin is happy to have running back Silas Redd. That's especially true after expected starter Curtis McNeal, whose durability Kiffin has questioned, got hurt this week and D.J. Morgan, who got benched last season because of fumbling, fumbled twice in a practice. Michael Lev of the Orange County-Register had the story.
In his first day as UCLA’s starting QB, Brett Hundley got off to a rocky start, tossing four interceptions, Miguel Melendez of the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

Oregon State offensive lineman Jake Welch was excited to hear that the fall camp ritual of creative coiffure was returning to Corvallis. What fun it would be, Welch thought, to break out the shaver and give those young guys some really ugly hair. Turns out Welch wasn’t spared the makeover. Teammates gave him a “checkerboard’’ hairdo and John Hunt of the Oregonian had the story.
The Washington State Cougars don’t have a quarterback controversy, but it’s not for a lack of trying by sophomore Connor Halliday. Halliday and presumed starter Jeff Tuel split time equally with the No. 1 offense and produced similarly glossy numbers in WSU’s first scrimmage Saturday afternoon at Martin Stadium, Howie Stalwick of the Tacoma News-Tribune reported. Halliday set a WSU freshman record by passing for 494 yards in a win over Arizona State last season.
Despite a third ACL injury, Washington running back Deontae Cooper is still determined to resume his football career, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reported.
When Wes Chandler finished his NFL playing career with an abbreviated stint with the 49ers in 1988, he got a taste of the Bay Area. More of a nibble, really. Now in his first year as receivers coach at Cal, the 55-year-old Chandler is here for what he hopes will be a feast working on Jeff Tedford's staff, John Crumpacker of the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
They’ve settled on a quarterback at UCLA. They’ve narrowed the choices in Tempe. Now, decision time looms for Stanford coach David Shaw, Tom FitzGerald of the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Will it be Josh Nunes or Brett Nottingham?
More bad news for Utah backup quarterback Jon Hays. Utes coach Kyle Whittingham said using freshman QB Travis Wilson in Wildcat packages to supplement starter Jordan Wynn’s passing ability is a definite possibility, Lya Wodraska of the Salt Lake Tribune wrote.
Tony Jones is expected to be Colorado’s starting tailback this season, but if the Buffaloes had not extended that scholarship offer, Jones would have signed with his next-best choice: Stony Brook, Tom Kensler of the Denver Post reported.
Arizona State coach Todd Graham’s decision this week on a starting QB will shape the program for years to come, wrote Paola Boivin of the Arizona Republic. Of course, that assumes Graham will stick with that QB and not switch if he struggles. ASU’s QB situation could also be fluid this season, given the inexperience of all three contenders: Taylor Kelly, Michael Eubank and Mike Bercovici.
Arizona added the 25th member to its recruiting class Saturday when defensive lineman Luca Bruno from Oak Park (Calif.) High School committed. He is rated a three-star recruit by 247Sports, Rivals.com and Scout.com, Anthony Gimino of the Tucson Citizen reported. With the addition, the Wildcats' 2013 class is all but complete.
