No. 24 Florida (1-0, 0-0 SEC) at Texas A&M (0-0, 0-0 SEC)
Kickoff: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)
Spread: Texas A&M by 1.5
Watchability: The Aggies make their long-awaited SEC debut against a ranked Gators team at raucous Kyle Field. It’s Kevin Sumlin’s up-tempo offense against Will Muschamp’s fast defense.
Shining stars: Texas A&M: Running back Christine Michael was on pace for a 1,200-yard season before tearing his ACL last year, but looks healthy now. The senior is the SEC’s leading active rusher with 2,374 career yards. Michael and freshman sensation Trey Williams will run behind a strong O-line anchored by All-American left tackle Luke Joeckel, hoping to take pressure off redshirt freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel. Florida: Running back Mike Gillislee is the centerpiece of the Gators’ power-running scheme. He ran for 94 yards in the first half against Bowling Green, finishing with 148 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries (6.1 ypc).
Who could steal the show: Texas A&M: Pass rushers Sean Porter and Damontre Moore combined for 18 sacks last season, making the Aggies the only team in the nation with two returners who ranked in the top 25 in sacks. They’ll be chasing mobile Florida QB Jeff Driskel all day. Florida: Cornerback Marcus Roberson’s 31-yard interception return helped the Gators pull away from Bowling Green. CB Jaylen Watkins batted away three passes and nearly had a pick. With standout safety Matt Elam patrolling the back, Florida’s pass defense might be better than last year’s, which finished third in the SEC and seventh nationally.
You going? Ranking the road trip: Embrace the 12th man tradition. It dates to 1922 when Dana Bible, head coach of undermanned A&M, asked a former player in the stands to suit up. He did not enter the game, but stood on the sideline ready if needed. Now Aggies fans stand throughout to show their support. They practice and coordinate their yells, making Kyle Field one of the nation’s toughest places to play.
Magic number for Texas A&M: 1. Kevin Sumlin’s team at Houston last year ranked No. 1 nationally in passing yards, total yards and scoring (49.3).
Magic number for Florida: 1. Florida is 1-7-2 all-time in games played in Texas.
The game comes down to: Manziel will become the first freshman QB to start an Aggies season opener. Driskel, a sophomore, makes his first start after winning the QB job last week with a 10-of-16 performance. Each team has a strong running game. The outcome hinges on which QB makes the fewest mistakes.
Prediction: Florida 24, Texas A&M 20
