The quarterback competition at Rutgers has finally reached a conclusion. After two seasons of shuffling quarterbacks, new head coach Kyle Flood stated early after his promotion that he wanted to name a certain starter at least a week before the season opener on Sept. 1 at Tulane.
The school released an official statement from Flood Monday morning, where he named sophomore Gary Nova the starting quarterback for 2012.
"We are fortunate to have two talented quarterbacks who have won big games for us," Flood said in the statement. "This has been an excellent competition but Gary's body of work ultimately earned him the job."
Nova's competition with junior Chas Dodd has ongoing since spring practice. Dodd started eight games for the Scarlet Knights' last season, throwing for 1,574 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Nova saw action in ten games as part of 2011's rotation, throwing for 1,553 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
The 6-foot-2, 225 pound Nova reportedly won the job after an impressive showing in Rutgers' scrimmage on Saturday night. The sophomore connected with Mark Harrison for a 60-yard touchdown and Miles Shuler for a 75-yard score as part of his three touchdown, zero interception performance.
Dodd actually recorded four touchdown passes of his own, but Flood was clearly more confident in Nova's performance over time during the competition. SB Nation's Mark Ennis (@Mengus22) actually predicted that Nova would win the job during Friday's Big East Preview edition of the CBS Sports College Football Podcast - which you can check out RIGHT HERE.
