San Diego State vs. Boise State score: Aztecs stifle Broncos, secure Mountain West Championship Game berth
San Diego State capped off its first 11-win regular season with Friday's victory
No. 21 San Diego State punched its ticket to the Mountain West Championship Game after a 27-16 victory over Boise State on Friday. In winning the West division, the Aztecs moved to 11-1 and await Utah State, which beat New Mexico 35-10 in Friday action.
Down 16-3 in the second quarter, San Diego State scored 24 points in nine minutes of game time to pull away, including both a passing and rushing touchdown from quarterback Jordon Brookshire. The senior had a tremendous game in relief of the injured Lucas Johnson with 192 yards on 11-of-15 passing, 46 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Receiver Jesse Matthews caught nine passes for 133 yards and a touchdown in the win.
Boise State quarterback Hank Bachmeier threw two interceptions before being knocked out with an injury in the fourth quarter. Backup Jack Sears also threw an interception on just two pass attempts to ice the game while running back George Holani posted 70 yards on 20 carries. However, the offense couldn't get going after halftime. Every second-half drive for the Broncos ended with either a punt, interception or turnover on downs.
San Diego State has now won 11 games for the fourth time in program history. However, the 11 wins came in the regular season for the first time ever. The only loss came in a 30-20 decision to Fresno State on Oct. 30. CBS Sports' Jerry Palm has the Aztecs slated for the Frisco Bowl against No. 22 UTSA.
