There aren’t a lot of UCLA players within striking distance of school records, but here are a few who might do the deed this season.

It will take superhuman efforts, but that’s fitting. Records shouldn’t be broken with anything less.

Career rushing yards
Record holder: Gaston Green (1984-87),
3,731
Record chaser: Johnathan Franklin
Franklin is 1,062 yards from the record. He's ninth on the school’s all-time list with 2,669 yards. He had 1,127 yards in 2010 and 976 last season. Coach Jim Mora has said repeatedly that Franklin will be the main guy this season, but the Bruins are deep in the backfield. Damien Thigpen, Malcolm Jones, Jordon James and incoming freshman Paul Perkins could cut into his carries. You have to believe if Franklin is close, Mora will help make it happen.

Career punting yards
Record holder: Aaron Perez (2005-08), 12,220
Record chaser: Jeff Locke

Locke needs 3,395 yards this season to break it. That’s a lot of yards, but consider that UCLA is starting a redshirt freshman QB in Brett Hundley. How many Bruins' drives will stall? This is Locke’s senior season. He’ll need a memorable one to etch his name in the record books.

Rushing yards by a QB, single season
Record holder: Jeff Dankworth (1976), 815
Record chaser: Brett Hundley
Hundley may not get there in his freshman season, but the bet is he will at some point. Hundley’s legs are his greatest asset, whether moving the pocket on a passing play or taking off downfield. The Bruins need to keep him healthy, and they also have a stable of RBs, but you go with what you know. With little experience running Jim Mora’s offense, Hundley’s first inclination may be to run for daylight.
