Why Boston College can cover

Each of The Eagles' first three road games came in tough environments with games at No. 10 Florida State, No. 6 Missouri and at Virginia, so playing on a road in a potentially hostile environment at Virginia Tech in primetime shouldn't be too daunting. The Eagles defeated Florida State, 28-13, on Sept. 2 and although they fell to Missouri, 27-21, Boston College held a 14-3 lead at one point and covered the 14.5-point spread. Boston College is coming off a 24-14 road loss to Virginia on Oct. 5, but with a week off to rest and prepare, the Eagles could put together another strong road performance.

Boston College returned many of its key playmakers from last season, including dual-threat quarterback Thomas Castellanos, leading running back Kye Robichaux and leading receiver Lewis Bond from last year. Castellanos completed 22 of 30 passes (73.3%) for 254 yards and two touchdowns last week against Virginia. He did throw two interceptions though, so if he can limit those mistakes Boston College can find itself in better position to pull off the upset. See who to back at SportsLine.

Why Virginia Tech can cover

The Hokies snapped their two-game losing streak with a dominant 31-7 victory over Stanford on Oct 5. Virginia Tech forced two turnovers to spark the victory with consistent offensive play by scoring a touchdown in each quarter. The Hokies have scored a touchdown in seven of their last eight quarters and nearly pulled off an upset over No. 7 Miami before allowing the final 14 points in the fourth quarter in a 38-34 loss on Sept. 27.

But even though it was a loss, that game proved Virginia Tech can play with the best in the ACC just two years removed from going 1-6 in ACC play. The Hokies went 5-3 in the ACC last season, which included a 48-22 victory over Boston College. Kyron Drones completed 12 of 17 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 135 yards and 20 carries in the victory. Drones threw for 201 yards and two touchdowns while completing 73.7% of his passes last week so if he can come anywhere close to last year's dominant numbers against the Eagles, it could be a long night for Boston College. See who to back at SportsLine.
