The Backyard Brawl between the Pittsburgh Panthers and West Virginia Mountaineers will add another chapter to its storied history on Saturday at Acrisure Stadium. These two always seem to provide some drama, and hopefully that trend continues this weekend.
Pittsburgh enters this game riding high after a stunning comeback against Cincinnati in Week 2. The Panthers were down 21 points with under five minutes to go in the third quarter when they pulled off an incredible rally. Pitt scored the game's next 22 points to win 28-27 thanks to a Ben Sauls field goal with 17 seconds left.
Running back Desmond Reid sparked the comeback, and he finished with a monster day against the Bearcats. Reid surpassed the century mark on the ground (148 yards) and through the air (106 yards) while finding the end zone once. The Western Carolina transfer is now averaging 146.5 rushing yards in his first two games as a Panther.
Meanwhile, after a disappointing showing in their home-opener against Penn State, West Virginia bounced back with a blowout win over Albany last week. The Mountaineers rode their rushing attack en route to a 49-14 win over the Great Danes. Star running back CJ Donaldson Jr. led the way in that respect, going off for 125 yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries.
The West Virginia defense did let Albany quarterback Myles Burkett throw for 306 yards and a touchdown, but he wasn't terribly efficient. Burkett completed just 18 of his 39 throws last week, so the Mountaineers did manage to make life somewhat difficult on the Great Danes' signal-caller.
Now that these two teams have shaken off the rust, this matchup looks like one of the most intriguing of the Week 3 slate in college football.
