Diaz is absent from the lineup Friday at Kansas City.
Martin Maldonado will start at catcher and Yordan Alvarez will serve as the Astros' designated hitter as Michael Brantley patrols left field. Diaz has posted a strong .847 OPS with 21 home runs in 95 major-league games this season, but he's largely been a part-time player over the last few weeks.
