Avila (calves) began a rehab assignment Saturday in the rookie-level Florida Complex League, going 0-for-3 while catching six innings.
The appearance for the FCL club was Avila's first game action at any level since July 1. The 34-year-old backstop will likely be eased back slowly from bilateral calf strains, and with top catching prospect Keibert Ruiz set to make his Nationals debut Monday, Avila presumably won't be in store for more than 2-to-3 starts per week once he's activated from the 10-day injured list.
