The Red Sox designated Watson for assignment Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
The Rule 5 pick lasted on the active roster for four months, but he'll now clear out in order to make room for the team's trade-deadline acquisitions. Watson will now be available on waivers, and if he clears, he must be offered back to the Giants.
