Red Sox's Connelly Early: Getting second opinion
Early (elbow) will seek a second opinion, MLB.com reports.
Early underwent an MRI earlier this week, which revealed posterior elbow inflammation, but the left-hander wants to confirm that. The Red Sox placed him on the 15-day injured list after he exited a start against the Nationals after tossing four scoreless innings.

Red Sox's Romy Gonzalez: Plates two runs Friday
Gonzalez went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored in Friday's win over the Angels.
Gonzalez smacked his first triple of the season in the second inning, and he later delivered a bases-loaded, two-run single in the top of the third, scoring Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras. Gonzalez underwent shoulder surgery in March and didn't make his season debut until June 28. He's gone 5-for-15 at the plate since then.

Red Sox's Aroldis Chapman: Notches 17th save
Chapman recorded his 17th save of the season Friday against the Angels after tossing a scoreless ninth inning, allowing two hits and striking out one.
Chapman went 4-for-6 in save chances in June, giving up six runs (five earned) and posting a 7.50 ERA and 2.50 WHIP over that stretch across 6.0 innings. Even though this was far from his cleanest outing, at least he got the job done while protecting the Red Sox's three-run lead in the ninth. Chapman has 17 saves in 19 chances this season, posting a 2.10 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 11.6 K/9 across 25.2 innings (27 appearances).

Red Sox's Jake Bennett: Strong outing in win
Bennett (3-3) earned the win against the Angels on Friday after tossing 7.2 innings of two-run ball, allowing five hits and striking out six. He also tossed a wild pitch.
This was Bennett's longest outing of the season and came just four outs shy of tossing a complete game, though by the time he left the mound, he was already at 92 pitches (61 strikes). Bennett has been pitching very well of late, and this was his fourth consecutive outing allowing two or fewer earned runs. He owns a 1.78 ERA and 0.67 WHIP across 25.1 innings over that stretch, and he's slated to make his next start on the road against the White Sox.

Red Sox's Anthony Seigler: Out of Friday's lineup
Seigler is not in the Red Sox's starting lineup against the Angels on Friday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Seigler has faced starting southpaws this season, but he will be on the bench for the beginning of Friday's contest while Romy Gonzalez starts at the keystone and bats sixth against Angels left-hander Reid Detmers. Seigler has gone 12-for-31 (.387) with one steal, four walks, one home run, three RBI and six runs scored over his last nine games.

Red Sox's Patrick Sandoval: Could join Boston's rotation
Sandoval (biceps) is an option to replace Connelly Early (elbow) in Boston's rotation, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy mentioned Sandoval or Brayan Bello as potential fill-ins for Early, who was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with left elbow inflammation. Sandoval, whose rehab assignment ends Saturday, will make one more start at Double-A Portland this weekend and is scheduled to throw around 70 pitches. With a scheduled day off coming Monday, however, Boston won't need a fifth starter until July 11.

Red Sox's Nate Eaton: Will appeal three-game ban
Eaton will appeal the three-game suspension he received Thursday and will be eligible to play until the appeal process is completed, Evan Drellich of The Athletic reports.
MLB issued bans for Eaton and teammate Willson Contreras (seven games) along with Washington pitchers Cade Cavalli (seven games) and Miles Mikolas (five games) for their roles in a benches-clearing incident that occurred Tuesday. Eaton's suspension was set to begin Friday, but the utility player will remain active for the time being.

Red Sox's Willson Contreras: Appealing suspension
Contreras will appeal the seven-game suspension he received Thursday, allowing him to keep playing until the appeal process is completed, Evan Drellich of The Athletic reports.
MLB issued bans for Contreras and teammate Nate Eaton (three games) along with Washington pitchers Cade Cavalli (seven games) and Miles Mikolas (five games) for their roles in a benches-clearing incident that occurred Tuesday. Contreras' suspension was set to begin Friday, but he'll remain active for the Red Sox's series opener against the Angels while he waits for appeal process to play out.

Red Sox's Nate Eaton: Gets three-game suspension
Eaton received a three-game suspension Thursday for his actions during a benches-clearing incident Tuesday against the Nationals, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports
The benches-clearing incident was sparked when Cade Cavalli struck out Willson Contreras. Contreras got a seven-game suspension while Cavalli received a seven-game ban and Miles Mikolas five games on the Nationals' side. Unless Eaton appeals the ban, he won't be able to play until July 7.

Red Sox's Willson Contreras: Suspended seven games
Contreras received a seven-game suspension Thursday for his actions during and following Tuesday's benches-clearing incident against the Nationals, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports.
The benches-clearing incident Tuesday was sparked after Cade Cavalli struck out Contreras, which led to Contreras being ejected. Along with the first baseman, Nate Eaton was also suspended for three games. On the Nationals' side, Cavalli received a seven-game suspension and Miles Mikolas a five-game ban. Unless Contreras appeals the suspension, he won't be able to play until July 11.

Red Sox's Connelly Early: MRI confirms inflammation
Early has been diagnosed with left posterior elbow inflammation following an MRI, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports.
It appears to be a best-case scenario after Early was forced to depart Tuesday's start against the Nationals after four innings and then landed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday. The Red Sox have not yet officially determined next steps for the young hurler, but the hope is Early will be able to resume throwing soon. If that happens, it's possible the left-hander could rejoin the rotation not long after the All-Star break.

Red Sox's Payton Tolle: Chased early by Nats
Tolle (4-6) took the loss Wednesday as the Red Sox were routed 10-2 by the Nationals, coughing up six runs on seven hits and three walks over three-plus innings. He struck out five.
Four of the hits off Tolle went for extra bases, including a first-inning homer by Andres Chaparro and a fourth-inning blast by Nasim Nunez -- with both long balls being their first of the season. It's the first time since May 28 that the southpaw has failed to last at least five innings, and Wednesday's outing was his shortest of the year. Tolle will take a 3.39 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 74:23 K:BB through 74.1 innings into his next start, which is scheduled to come on the road early next week against the White Sox.

Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Idle against southpaw
Yoshida is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
He'll be on the bench Wednesday while southpaw Andrew Alvarez serves as a primary pitcher for the Nationals, and the left-handed-hitting Yoshida's opportunities versus righties could soon dry up as well. The Red Sox have already been using Yoshida as a part-time player versus righties of late while he's put together an uninspiring .246/.329/.345 slash line (88 wRC+) in those matchups for the season. With Yoshida having been limited to just five starts in the outfield, he's not providing much defensive value to offset the lack of production he's provided out of the designated-hitter spot.

Red Sox's Jarren Duran: Held out of lineup against lefty
Duran is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
The left-handed-hitting Duran will hit the bench for a third straight matchup versus a lefty starter/primary pitcher (Andrew Alvarez) and looks as though he'll be relegated to a strong-side platoon role while he's slashed .216/.284/.297 (61 wRC+) in 81 plate appearances versus southpaws on the season. Nate Eaton will replace Duran in left field and will bat seventh.

Red Sox's Tsung-Che Cheng: Hitting bench Wednesday
Cheng is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Cheng started at shortstop in each of the last five games following his call-up from Triple-A Worcester last Friday, going 2-for-15 with a double, a walk and a run. He'll cede shortstop to Andruw Monasterio while southpaw Andrew Alvarez works as a primary pitcher for Washington, but the left-handed-hitting Cheng could continue to handle a strong-side platoon role at the position while all of Trevor Story (sports hernia), Marcelo Mayer (forearm) and Isiah Kiner-Falefa (forearm) are on the shelf.

Red Sox's Carlos Narvaez: On bench Wednesday
Narvaez is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals.
Narvaez will receive the afternoon off after he started behind the plate both of the previous two nights. Connor Wong will get the nod at catcher Wednesday, but Narvaez looks to be the Red Sox's new top option at the position after the struggling Mickey Gasper was recently demoted to Triple-A Worcester.
