Bogaerts was lifted for a pinch hitter with the bases loaded in the ninth inning of Thursday's 6-2 loss to the Yankees.
The slumping Bogaerts -- he's 2-for-23 over the last six games and was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Thursday -- was pulled for Mitch Moreland, a left-handed bat that might have been able to take advantage of the short right-field porch at Yankee Stadium. Manager John Farrell admitted to Chad Jennings of the Boston Herald that the shortstop's recent struggles factored into the decision. Bogaerts has slumped since experiencing soreness in his hand when he was hit by a pitch in early July, but this was the first indication that those struggles could rob him of potential RBI opportunities.
