Lowrie announced his retirement from baseball Thursday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Lowrie batted just .180/.245/.263 in 184 plate appearances last season with the Athletics before getting released in August. The 38-year-old infielder will hang up his cleats with 1,185 career hits and a lifetime .257/.330/.406 slash line spread over parts of 14 major-league campaigns. Beyond his seven years with the A's, he also spent time with the Red Sox, Astros and Mets.

Lowrie was released by the A's on Thursday. Lowrie was designated for assignment by Oakland on Wednesday, and he's now officially on the open market. The 38-year-old has appeared in 50 games this season and has a .180/.245/.263 slash line with three home runs and 16 RBI.

Lowrie was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Wednesday. Lowrie wasn't in the lineup for the last two games, and he'll lose his spot on the 40-man roster after slashing just .180/.245/.263 with three home runs, 16 RBI, 14 runs and a stolen base over 50 games with the Athletics this year. It wouldn't be surprising to see the 38-year-old become a free agent if he goes unclaimed on waivers. Seth Brown should see increased playing time as the Athletics' designated hitter.

Lowrie is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Angels. Lowrie is 2-for-16 with a double and a walk in four games since being reinstated from the injured list last week, and he'll take a seat for the second consecutive contest. Chad Pinder will bat fifth as the designated hitter Tuesday.

Lowrie is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Angels. Lowrie is just 2-for-16 (.125) since being activated from the injured list last week, so he will get a mental break Monday. Stephen Piscotty will serve as Oakland's designated hitter instead.
