  • Lorenzo Cain: Confirms retirement
    By RotoWire

Cain said earlier this week in an interview with Andy McCullough of The Athletic that he has retired from professional baseball. Cain added that he will return to Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City this summer for an official retirement ceremony. The 36-year-old was cut loose by the Brewers last June after batting just .179/.231/.234 across his first 43 games (156 plate appearances) to open the 2022 campaign. He won a World Series with Kansas City in 2015 and will finish with 1,220 career hits and 190 stolen bases spread over parts of 13 major-league seasons.

  • Cain was designated for assignment by the Brewers on Saturday. Cain was in the final season of his five-year deal with Milwaukee and has indicated that 2022 could be his final year before retiring. The 36-year-old reached 10 years of major-league service time Saturday but said that he came to a mutual decision with the team to be designated for assignment after slashing .179/.231/.234 with a home run, 17 runs, nine RBI and two stolen bases to begin the season. If Cain isn't claimed on waivers, he said that he'll contemplate the decision of whether to seek an opportunity to continue playing or whether to retire.

  • Cain is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Phillies. The 36-year-old is 0-for-19 over his past five games and finds himself on the bench for the second straight contest. Tyrone Taylor will again start in center field in his place, and Cain could be in store for reduced playing time moving forward with Hunter Renfroe (hamstring) officially back from the injured list.

  • Cain is not in Sunday's lineup against the Padres. Tyrone Taylor has earned more steady playing time of late than Cain, who is 7-for-52 (.135) over his last 15 games. Once Hunter Renfroe (hamstring) returns, Cain could start to lose even more playing time.
