Avilan has retired from baseball, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Avilan, 34, last saw action in the big leagues in 2021 with the Nationals before undergoing Tommy John surgery. He had a nice career as a left-handed reliever, posting a 3.43 ERA over parts of 10 major-league seasons.

Avilan (elbow) has given up two earned runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one over two innings in his pair of appearances since being reinstated from Triple-A Rochester's 7-day injured list June 8. Avilan opened the season on Rochester's IL while finishing up his recovery program for his April 2021 Tommy John surgery, but he was cleared to begin a rehab assignment in mid-May. He made nine appearances for High-A Wilmington before ultimately rejoining the Triple-A club, where he'll look to perform well enough to earn a promotion to the Nationals later in the season. Across stops with the Dodgers, White Sox, Phillies, Mets, Yankees, Nationals and Atlanta over the past 10 seasons, Avilan owns a lifetime 3.43 ERA over 458 relief appearances.

Avilan (elbow) re-signed Monday with the Nationals on a minor-league contract, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. Avilan's deal likely includes an invitation to big-league spring training, but he'll probably be in rehab mode throughout February and March while he recovers from the Tommy John procedure he required last April. The 32-year-old lefty should receive a clean bill of health at some point in the middle of the summer, but he'll likely need to first perform well at Triple-A Rochester before getting a look in the Washington bullpen. Over 458 career big-league appearances out of the bullpen, Avilan owns a 3.43 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 12.0 K-BB%.

Avilan (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The move doesn't change Avilan's return timeline at all, as he underwent Tommy John surgery in mid-April and will be out until the middle of next year. It clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Jon Lester to return from the COVID-19 injured list.

Avilan (elbow) has elected to undergo Tommy John surgery, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports. Avilan was diagnosed with a torn UCL on Saturday, but he took several days to decide whether to undergo surgery or whether to simply take some time to rest. Since he'll opt for surgery, Avilan will miss the remainder of the 2021 season and could also miss the start of the 2022 campaign. Prior to the injury, Avilan posted a 12.60 ERA and 2.00 WHIP in five innings across four relief appearances.
