• Padres' Jason Adam: Uneven results so far this spring

  Through six Cactus League appearances, Adam has allowed five runs on four hits over five innings while posting a 4:1 K:BB. Adam's spring stats don't look great on paper, though three of the five runs he's allowed came on one swing -- a Joey Wiemer homer March 13. Adam was outstanding last season, posting a 1.95 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, 31 holds, four saves and an 81:23 K:BB over 72.3 regular-season innings between Tampa Bay and San Diego. Adam is slated to set up closer Robert Suarez again this season, so he should get plenty of opportunities for holds. Suarez has had a rough spring, allowing eight runs over 3.2 frames, but he likely has a long enough leash to be in no danger of yielding the ninth-inning role come Opening Day. However, should Suarez's struggles carry over into the regular season, Adam and Jeremiah Estrada would be the top options to take over in save situations.

  The Padres acquired Adam from the Rays on Sunday in exchange for right-hander Dylan Lesko, outfielder Homer Bush and catcher J.D. Gonzalez, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Adam had shined in a high-leverage role out of the Tampa Bay bullpen this season, logging a 2.49 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and 50:16 K:BB across 47 innings while recording four saves and 19 holds. With the Rays, Adam appeared to be next in line for saves behind closer Pete Fairbanks, and he'll likely find himself in a similar spot in the bullpen hierarchy in San Diego. The Padres have leaned on Robert Suarez as their primary closer this season, and he's done nothing to lose job security while rolling to a 1.51 ERA and 23 saves in 26 chances this season.

• Rays' Jason Adam: Takes loss against Jays

  Adam (4-2) allowed four earned runs (two earned) on two walks and two hits while striking out one to take the loss Wednesday against the Blue Jays. Adam entered the game in the eighth inning with the score tied at 2-2. He retired two of the first three batters he faced but let the next three hitters reach, all of whom came around to score on a pair of fielding miscues by the Rays. Adam has allowed five earned runs across his last three innings, but he still has an excellent 2.54 ERA and 0.91 WHIP across 46 frames on the campaign.

Adam entered the game in the ninth inning with the score tied, 2-2, and turned in his eighth scoreless performance in his last 10 appearances. He has a 9:1 K:BB in that span, though he has allowed three earned runs. While Pete Fairbanks (thumb) isn't expected to be sidelined long, Adam could get a short-term look in save scenarios.

Adam entered the game in the eighth inning with the score tied, 2-2. He settled in after allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base, though he was unable to recover from his early struggles. The outing snapped a seven-appearance scoreless stretch, and Adam has been excellent overall this season by maintaining a 2.05 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across 22 innings to go along with three saves and 10 holds.
