Candelario signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees on Saturday, Conor Foley of YES Network reports. Candelario slashed only .113/.198/.213 across 91 plate appearances with the Reds before landing on the IL in late April with a back injury. After making a full recovery, the 31-year-old was released by Cincinnati on Sunday, and he'll now get a chance to redeem himself in the Yankees' minor-league system. If Candelario is able to return to form at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he could join the big-league roster at some point to provide infield depth down the stretch.

The Reds released Candelario on Sunday, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. After none of MLB's other 29 teams were willing to put in a waiver claim for Candelario, the Reds will be on the hook for the money remaining on the 31-year-old's three-year, $45 million deal, which he signed in December 2023. Given his extensive big-league experience, Candelario shouldn't have much trouble landing with a new club, though he might have to settle for a minor-league deal after slashing just .113/.198/.213 with a 31.9 percent strikeout rate over 91 plate appearances with the Reds this season.

The Reds reinstated Candelario (back) from the 10-day injured list Monday and designated him for assignment. Though Cincinnati has received underwhelming production at third base from Santiago Espinal and Christian Encarnacion-Strand of late, management apparently didn't view Candelario as a short-term solution at the position now that the 31-year-old is healthy again after he had been on the shelf since April 30 due to a lumbar spine strain. Before landing on the IL, Candelario was batting just .113 with a career-high 31.9 percent strikeout rate over 91 plate appearances, and he didn't fare much better in an extended rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville, with whom he produced a .211/.318/.333 slash line in 15 games. Now that he's been DFA'd, Candelario will be exposed to waivers, but he's unlikely to find a suitor that's willing to take on the money remaining on his three-year, $45 million deal, which runs through 2026. Candelario could choose to become a free agent once he clears waivers.

Candelario (back) started at third base and went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and an RBI in a rehab game with the ACL Reds on Monday. Candelario opened a rehab assignment and played five innings in the field. He's expected to remain with the ACL Reds for at least one more game before moving to Triple-A Louisville. The corner infielder/DH is not expected to step into a starting role upon his return, but that could change depending on injuries. A spot at third base could be waiting until Noelvi Marte (oblique) is ready to come off the IL.

Candelario (back) will begin a rehab assignment in the Arizona Complex League on Monday, MLB.com reports. Candelario is expected to play a couple of games in the ACL before moving to Triple-A Louisville for an unspecified number of at-bats. He's been dealing with the back issue since late April. Prior to landing on the 10-day injured list, Candelario had lost a regular spot in the starting lineup and was batting .113 over 22 games.
