Bauers elected free agency Monday, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Bauers was booted off the Brewers' 40-man roster Monday and has decided to test out free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment. The 29-year-old slashed .199/.301/.361 with 12 home runs and 13 steals over 116 regular-season contests for the Brewers and also added one homer during the playoffs.

Bauers is absent from the lineup Thursday for Game 3 of the National League Wild Card Series versus the Mets. It's southpaw Jose Quintana on the bump for the Mets, so the left-handed hitting Bauers will yield to Gary Sanchez for the second straight day. William Contreras is receiving a turn at designated hitter while Sanchez works behind the plate. Bauers will be a candidate to come off the bench once the Mets turn to a right-handed reliever.
