The Pirates designated German for assignment Thursday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. The move comes after German's poor outing Wednesday in which he allowed six earned runs on nine hits across three innings. The 32-year-old ended up making seven total appearances for the Pirates in his return to the majors. He had allowed just two earned runs in his first 12.0 innings, but surrendered 16 earned runs in his last 8.2 innings. Since departing the Yankees in November, German had two stints with the Pirates, the second of which has come to a close. In a corresponding move, Joey Wentz was activated Thursday after being claimed off waivers from Detroit on Tuesday.

German (0-1) allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and a walk while striking out three over three innings to take the loss versus the Cubs on Wednesday. German didn't pitch well, but it wouldn't have made much difference considering the Pirates couldn't muster a hit. He's given up 17 runs (16 earned) over his last 8.2 innings, a span that includes Wednesday's start and a pair of relief appearances. For the year, German has a 7.84 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 18:13 K:BB through 20.2 innings over seven appearances (two starts). The Pirates haven't revealed if he'll get a chance to stay in the rotation after this poor outing.

German is slated to start Wednesday's game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. At least temporarily, the Pirates will expand the rotation to a six men, with the addition of German building in an additional day of rest between starts for rookies Paul Skenes and Jared Jones. German tossed six scoreless innings against the Rangers in his lone other start for the Pirates on Aug. 21, but he worked in long relief in his last two appearances, covering 5.2 innings while yielding 10 runs on 11 hits and five walks.

German allowed three hits and four walks over six scoreless innings in a no-decision Wednesday against the Rangers. He struck out four. Making his first start this season, German was excellent, blanking the Rangers over six frames despite allowing at least one baserunner in five frames. The 31-year-old right-hander has allowed just two runs through 12 innings this year with the Pirates, posting a 1.00 WHIP with eight strikeouts. However, with Jared Jones (lat) nearing a return, German figures to head back to a swingman role in Pittsburgh.
