Altavilla signed a minor-league contract with the White Sox on Thursday and received an invitation to spring training. Altavilla made five appearances for the Royals in 2024, giving up six earned runs over just 3.2 innings while striking out five batters and walking three. Most of his time was spent in Triple-A, however, where he logged a 3.51 ERA and 1.34 WHIP over 41 frames. The lack of depth in Chicago's bullpen will give the 32-year-old righty better odds at cracking the Opening Day roster, but Triple-A Charlotte remains his most likely destination.

Altavilla cleared waivers Saturday and was sent outright to Triple-A Omaha. The Royals dropped Altavilla from their 40-man roster immediately upon activating him from the 60-day IL on Thursday, but he'll remain within the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 31-year-old righty has allowed six runs in only 3.2 major-league innings this season, though he's been more effective in Triple-A, pitching to the tune of a 4.11 ERA through 35 frames.

The Royals activated Altavilla (oblique) from the 60-day injured list Thursday and designated him for assignment. Altavilla is recovered from his right oblique strain, but the Royals have decided there isn't a place for him on the active roster. The veteran reliever has coughed up six runs over 3.2 frames covering five appearances for Kansas City this season.

The Royals announced that Altavilla (oblique) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha on Tuesday. Altavilla hasn't pitched since June 20 after suffering a strained right oblique and will begin a rehab stint Tuesday. However, he won't be eligible to return from the injured list until Aug. 19, so his stay at Omaha will last multiple weeks. The right-hander allowed six runs in 3.2 big-league innings this season.

Altavilla (oblique) was transferred to the 60-day IL on Friday. Altavilla suffered a right oblique strain June 20 and was initially placed on the 15-day IL. However, with the Royals adding Walter Pennington to the 40-man and 26-man roster, Altavilla was shifted to the 60-day IL to open up a roster spot. Altavilla won't be eligible to return until the middle of September.
