  • Romano was assigned to minor-league camp Saturday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Romano signed a minor-league contract with a major league invite March 22, but he'll start the year with Triple-A Tacoma. The reliever only pitched one-third of an inning this spring, allowing one hit and no runs. As a member of the Reds, Brewers and Yankees in 2021, Romano posted a putrid 6.12 ERA and 1.68 WHIP.

  • Romano agreed Tuesday with the Mariners on a minor-league contract, Corey Brock of The Athletic reports. Romano will attend Seattle's big-league camp as a non-roster invitee, but he's more likely to begin the campaign at Triple-A Tacoma than with the big club. He made 19 relief appearances in the majors in 2021 between the Yankees, Brewers and Reds, compiling a 6.12 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 25 innings.

  • Sal Romano: Cut loose by Yanks
    By RotoWire

The Yankees released Romano (finger) on Monday. Romano presumably isn't back to full health yet after the Yankees placed him on the injured list Wednesday with a right index finger sprain, but the big club won't bother waiting on his return. Instead, New York will cut Romano loose to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Luis Severino (shoulder), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Romano was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a right index finger sprain, retroactive to Wednesday. Romano was labeled day-to-day after being hit by a line drive on his right hand during Tuesday's win over Baltimore. It looked like he could be in line to avoid the injured list after X-rays came back negative, but he apparently is experiencing enough discomfort to warrant a move to the IL after all. He'll be eligible to be reinstated Sept. 25 against the Red Sox, but depending on how long he needs to recover, it's possible he doesn't return during the regular season. Reliever Clarke Schmidt was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Romano on the 28-man roster.
