The Orioles released Suarez on Wednesday, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. Suarez inked a minor-league deal with the Orioles over the offseason and had struggled at Triple-A Norfolk with a 5.93 ERA. The veteran left-hander will now look to latch on in another organization.

The Orioles reassigned Suarez to minor-league camp Sunday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. According to Kubatko, Suarez's locker had been empty at camp for the last few days, but the 31-year-old southpaw hasn't requested a release from his minor-league deal and is expected to stay in the organization and report to Triple-A Norfolk for the start of the minor-league season. Suarez made 13 big-league appearances for St. Louis in 2023, logging a 7.16 ERA and 1.73 WHIP across 27.2 innings.

Suarez elected free agency Thursday after clearing outright waivers. Suarez is off the 40-man roster in St. Louis and will head to the open market. The 31-year-old southpaw gave up 27 runs -- 22 earned -- over 27.2 innings of relief with the Cardinals in 2023.

Suarez pitched to a 7.16 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 17:15 K:BB over 27.2 innings this season. Suarez stayed in the Cardinals' bullpen after the trade deadline left the pitching staff depleted. He maintained scoreless outings just three times in 13 appearances as a long reliever in his first major-league action since he appeared in six games with the Giants in 2020. Suarez hasn't recorded a save or hold since 2019, and at 31 years old, his major-league future is cloudy.

The Cardinals optioned Suarez to Triple-A Memphis on Friday. Suarez allowed three runs over two innings in each of his two appearances for St. Louis, and will now head back to the minors in order to right the ship. Though his 4.08 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in Triple-A aren't too impressive, Suarez could return to the Cards' bullpen later this season if the major-league club needs a fresh arm.
