• Jose Urquidy: Reaches free agency

  The Tigers declined Urquidy's $4 million option for 2026 on Thursday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Urquidy missed most of the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery, though he finished the 2025 campaign healthy. The 30-year-old right-hander got knocked around in two regular-season relief outings for the Tigers but pitched well on his rehab assignment, posting a 2.91 ERA and 18:5 K:BB over 21.2 innings. Urquidy will look to land a rotation job somewhere this winter, though he might have to settle for a minor-league contract.

  The Tigers designated Urquidy for assignment Thursday. While the transaction for the time being is officially labeled as Urquidy being designated for assignment, the righty has agreed to be optioned to Triple-A Toledo and that is expected to happen Friday. Urquidy has allowed two runs over 2.1 innings since the Tigers reinstated him from the injured list earlier this week, and the club has decided it doesn't have a spot for him on the active roster right now.

• Tigers' Jose Urquidy: Returns from injured list

  The Astros reinstated Urquidy (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Friday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Urquidy has spent the entire season working his way back from a Tommy John procedure he underwent last June. The 30-year-old righty began a rehab assignment in early August and has since turned in a 3.20 ERA and 0.86 WHIP across 19.2 innings between Single-A Lakeland and Triple-A Toledo. Now cleared to pitch in the majors for the first time since 2023, he will presumably work out of the bullpen for the final few weeks of the regular season and aim to return to the starting rotation in 2026. Sawyer Gipson-Long (neck) was placed on the 15-day IL to make room for Urquidy on the active roster, and Beau Brieske (forearm) landed on the 60-day IL to free up a spot on the 40-man roster.

• Tigers' Jose Urquidy: One more rehab outing on tap

  Urquidy (elbow) is set to make one more rehab appearance for Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday or Wednesday before being evaluated for a potential return, MLB.com reports. Urquidy has already made a total of nine rehab appearances, including five with the Mud Hens. The veteran righty looked sharp in his last two outings, logging a total of six scoreless innings with six strikeouts. Urquidy, who is working his way back from June 2024 Tommy John surgery, last pitched in the majors in 2023, so the Tigers are likely to be very cautious with his return. He'll likely slot into a bullpen role to close out this season, though he figures to compete for a 2026 rotation spot next spring.

  Urquidy (elbow) struck out three and gave up two hits and no walks over three scoreless innings Tuesday in his rehab appearance with Triple-A Toledo. Urquidy first began his rehab assignment Aug. 3 with Single-A Lakeland, but because he's working his way back from June 2024 Tommy John surgery, the right-hander has been granted a 10-day extension beyond the standard 30-day rehab window. Though the 30-year-old is expected to get the chance to compete for a rotation spot with Detroit next spring if his $4 million team option for 2026 is picked up, Urquidy will be joining the Tigers as a reliever if he gets activated at any point in September. Through his eight rehab appearances between Lakeland and Toledo, Urquidy has posted a 4.30 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 12:3 K:BB in 14.2 innings.
