Smith underwent Tommy John ligament construction surgery Friday, which included an internal brace procedure, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Per DiComo, the procedure was a "full-blown Tommy John ligament reconstruction," which means Smith will likely be sidelined for 12-to-18 months. With that in mind, the reliever -- who previously underwent Tommy John surgery in the spring of 2019 -- will likely miss at least half of next season and may not pitch again until 2026. He's slated to be a free agent in November.

Smith will undergo surgery to repair a tear in his right UCL on Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Smith sought a second opinion and ultimately won't be able to avoid going under the knife after being diagnosed with a significant tear in his right UCL. However, it remains to be determined if he'll require Tommy John surgery or an internal brace procedure, which would likely result in a quicker recovery. Smith is scheduled to meet with Dr. Keith Meister on Thursday to determine a plan of attack for the procedure.

The Mets transferred Smith (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday. The right-hander was diagnosed with a significant UCL tear in late June, so it's not a surprise he's been moved to the 60-day IL. Smith appears headed for Tommy John surgery but was expected to seek a second medical opinion before deciding his next steps.

Smith has been diagnosed with a significant UCL tear in his right elbow and is likely to undergo Tommy John surgery, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Smith is waiting on a second opinion before anything is decided, but it appears the writing is on the wall. It's a blow to the Mets and also poor timing for Smith, who is set to become a free agent this offseason. Given that it would be his second Tommy John surgery, Smith could be sidelined until 2026.

The Mets placed Smith on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a right elbow sprain, retroactive to Monday. Smith received an MRI after reporting tightness while playing catch earlier Wednesday. The severity of his injury remains unknown, but the Mets have already deemed the sprain worthy of a trip to the IL. Ty Adcock will come up from Triple-A Syracuse to fill the open spot in New York's bullpen.
