The Tigers designated Leonard for assignment Tuesday. Leonard slashed .263/.326/.455 with 10 home runs across 282 plate appearances for Triple-A Toledo in 2024. The Tigers are designating him for assignment to create space for one of the three pitchers being added to the 40-man roster Tuesday.

Leonard (hamstring) has gone 1-for-7 over two games since being reinstated from Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list Friday. Leonard returned to action for Toledo earlier this weekend for the first time since straining his right hamstring June 25 while running the bases, per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. The 23-year-old infielder has now had two extended absences this season, as he was also sidelined from April 8 through May 20 with a left oblique strain.

Leonard (oblique) was reinstated from Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list June 4 and has gone 3-for-18 with a double, two walks, an RBI and a run scored in five games since rejoining the club. Leonard had resided on the shelf at Toledo since early April with a left oblique strain. Before being activated, Leonard made eight rehab appearances with Single-A Lakeland and went 5-for-22 with a double and two stolen bases.

Leonard (oblique) began a rehab assignment with Single-A Lakeland on Tuesday and has gone 2-for-10 with a walk, a stolen base, two runs and an RBI through his first three games. Leonard has resided on Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list April 9 with a left oblique strain, but he looks to be on the cusp of rejoining the Tigers' top affiliate. Before landing on the shelf, Leonard appeared in eight games for Toledo and slashed .219/.306/.250 in 36 plate appearances.

The Tigers announced Tuesday that Leonard (oblique) will be re-evaluated next week and could begin a baseball progression program, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Leonard, who is a member of the Tigers' 40-man roster, was placed on Triple-A Toledo's 7-day injured list on April 9 after straining his left oblique. He's been able to complete daily rehab since being shut down with the injury, but Leonard has yet to get back on the field for hitting, fielding or running.
