Battenfield announced Saturday via his personal Instagram account that he has retired from professional baseball. The 27-year-old Battenfield had been unsigned since November after he elected free agency following a stint at Triple-A Albuquerque in the Rockies organization throughout the 2024 season. Battenfield had previously seen big-league action with the Guardians during the 2023 campaign, making seven appearances (six starts) while turning in a 5.19 ERA and 1.33 WHIP over 34.2 innings.

The Mets released Battenfield on Sunday. Battenfield attended big-league camp and made one Grapefruit League appearance for the Mets on Feb. 28 but was reassigned to the minors at some point thereafter. The Mets didn't see a fit for Battenfield on their Triple-A pitching staff, so he'll get the chance to explore his options elsewhere. Battenfield made seven appearances (six starts) at the big-league level for Cleveland in 2023, logging a 5.19 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 27:12 K:BB across 34.2 innings.

Battenfield cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday. He's no longer part of the Mets' 40-man roster but will remain in the organization. Battenfield collected a 5.19 ERA over 34.2 innings at the major-league level in 2023.

Battenfield was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday. He was up with the Mets only for a couple days and did not make an appearance. Battenfield has been replaced on the roster by Anthony Kay.

The Mets recalled Battenfield from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday. Battenfield was claimed off waivers from the Guardians on Sept. 2 and will join the Mets' major-league bullpen mix ahead of Friday's game at Philadelphia. Jeff Brigham has been optioned out in a corresponding roster move.
