The Pirates reinstated Holderman (wrist) from the 15-day injured list Sunday. With the active roster expanding from 26 to 28 men Sunday, the Pirates will bring aboard two relievers in Holderman and Ryan Borucki (wrist), both of whom were activated from the IL. Holderman had been on the shelf since Aug. 8 with a sprained wrist but looks to be good to go after tossing an inning for Triple-A Indianapolis in each of his five rehab appearances.

Holderman (1-3) allowed two earned runs on three hits and a walk while striking out one across one inning to take the loss Sunday against the Rays. Holderman entered the game in the eighth inning with the score knotted at 1-1 and allowed four of the first five batters he faced to reach base to account for the damage. This was the first time he has allowed an earned run in 10 appearances for the month, and he still has a 1.30 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 27.2 innings on the season. Aroldis Chapman figures to be the primary closer while David Bednar (oblique) is sidelined, but Holderman could also pick up some save chances as arguably Pittsburgh's best remaining high-leverage reliever.

Holderman allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit across two-thirds of an inning Thursday against the Phillies. Holderman was sidelined with an illness for a significant part of spring training, so he began on the season injured list to build up his workload. He was activated Thursday and entered the game in the seventh inning, only to serve up a two-run home run to the second batter he faced. Holderman will likely pitch in high-leverage spots, though he'll be behind both David Bednar and Aroldis Chapman for save opportunities.

Holderman (illness) could be activated from the injured list Thursday, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Holderman rejoined the Pirates at PNC Park on Tuesday as a member of the taxi squad and appears slated for activation when the team heads out on its road trip. The setup man has gotten off to a late start this season because of an illness.

The Pirates sent Holderman (illness) to Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday to begin a rehab assignment. A lengthy battle with a virus kept Holderman out of action for a significant amount of time during spring training, so he will head to Indianapolis in order to properly prepare for his regular-season debut. The 28-year-old righty will be eligible to return from the IL on April 9.
