The Mariners optioned Diaz to their spring training complex Monday. The move makes room on the Mariners' 28-man active roster for right-handed reliever Gregory Santos (biceps), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Diaz had made two appearances for the big club since being recalled Sept. 1, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three over 3.1 scoreless innings.

The Mariners recalled Diaz from Triple-A Tacoma prior to Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Angels. Diaz had started in all but one of his 24 appearances for Tacoma this season, logging a 4.73 ERA and 120:54 K:BB in 118 innings. With all five of the Mariners' starting pitchers healthy at the moment and new manager Dan Wilson having yet to express a desire to move to a six-man rotation, Diaz looks like he'll serve as a long-relief option for now.

The Mariners optioned Diaz to Triple-A Tacoma on Saturday. Diaz gave up two earned runs in his two appearances after being promoted from Triple-A on Tuesday. He'll now lose his spot in Seattle's bullpen to make room for Jonathan Hernandez, who was claimed off waivers from Texas on Friday.

Diaz (0-1) took the extra-inning loss against the Red Sox on Wednesday, allowing an unearned run on one hit over one-third of an inning. Diaz's first outing of his current big-league tenure, which just began Tuesday, lasted all of three pitches, as he surrendered a game-winning RBI double to Rafael Devers that plated automatic runner Tyler O'Neill. The southpaw has only one other appearance at the big-league level this season, having made a spot start against the White Sox back on June 11. While Diaz did see high-leverage work Wednesday, that's an outlier largely the byproduct of Andres Munoz and Yimi Garcia having been worked heavily over the past few days.

The Mariners recalled Diaz from Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday. Diaz will take Gabe Speier's spot on the 26-man roster, marking Diaz's second MLB stint of the season. The 27-year-old's lone appearance with the Mariners came in June when he allowed three runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings as a starter. He's expected to serve out of the bullpen during this stint but could be called upon if the Mariners need a last-second starter. In 18 Triple-A outings (17 starts), Diaz has a 3.88 ERA with a 95:42 K:BB during 97.1 innings.
