The Padres removed the 29-year-old from the 40-man roster Friday, and he'll remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Batten has appeared in just one big-league game this season and has a .247/.325/.348 slash line in 454 plate appearances with El Paso.

The Padres optioned Batten to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Batten's latest stint in the big league lasted just one day and he did not see any action. His roster spot will be filled by infielder Mason McCoy, who was called up from Triple-A.

The Padres recalled Batten from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday. The 29-year-old has been with Triple-A El Paso since late April but will join the Friars on Tuesday as Ha-Seong Kim (shoulder) heads to the injured list. Batten should serve as a depth infielder while up in the big leagues and likely won't see regular at-bats.
