Triple-A Toledo placed Flores on its 7-day injured list May 14 with an AC joint sprain in his right shoulder. Per Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, Flores threw a bullpen session Saturday, so he may not be far away from making his return from the 7-day IL. Prior to sustaining the injury, Flores compiled a 6.04 ERA, 1.86 WHIP and 19:19 K:BB across 22.1 innings over his 13 relief appearances for Toledo.

The Tigers optioned Flores to Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Flores was added to the 40-man roster over the winter but was always destined to begin the season back in the minors. His stint at Toledo to begin 2024 will be his first at the team's Triple-A affiliate.

Flores, who averaged 92.9 mph on his fastball last season, touched 99 mph in Grapefruit League play Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Flores got a swinging strikeout on the pitch, and a sustained increase in velocity would be good news for the young righty. He was selected to the 40-man roster in November, and while he'll likely start the year with Triple-A Toledo, Flores could be a bullpen option at some point in 2024 if he's able to pitch well in the minors.

The Tigers selected Flores to their 40-man roster Tuesday. Flores is now protected from selection in next month's Rule 5 Draft, though he's likely still far away from making his major-league debut. The 22-year-old right-hander posted a 4.65 ERA and 90:33 K:BB in 89 innings (21 starts) this past season between High-A West Michigan and Double-A Erie.
