Shugart worked around two walks in two-thirds of an inning Tuesday en route to his first career save in Tuesday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Blue Jays. Chris Martin worked a scoreless ninth inning to protect a 3-3 tie, while Justin Slaten had pitched earlier in the night, so manager Alex Cora had limited options to handle the bottom of the 10th after Boston took the lead. Lefty Zach Penrod began the frame, but his first offering was a wild pitch that sent the phantom runner to third base, and Penrod got only one out while putting two batters aboard. Shugart then took the mound and walked in one of his inherited runners, but he eventually got Addison Barger to pop out to end the game. Roles at the back of the Boston bullpen remain in flux over the final handful of games with Kenley Jansen (shoulder) on the shelf, but Shugart should be considered unlikely to see another save chance.

The Red Sox recalled Shugart from Triple-A Worcester on Monday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. He'll absorb the roster spot vacated by Kenley Jansen (shoulder), who was placed on the 15-day injured list. Shugart has yielded three runs over 1.1 innings covering three appearances during his brief time with the Red Sox this season.

The Red Sox optioned Shugart to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Shugart was recalled by the Red Sox on Sept. 1, and in his last outing Saturday against the White Sox, he gave up a three-run home run to Andrew Benintendi in the top of the seventh inning. In Triple-A this season, Shugart has a 4.55 ERA and 1.35 WHIP across 65.1 innings. The move makes room for right-hander Richard Fitts, who will start Sunday in his major-league debut against the White Sox.

The Red Sox optioned Shugart to Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Shugart made one relief appearance during his first stint in the majors, allowing one run over 2.2 innings. He's making room on the roster for the return of Cooper Criswell, who was activated from the COVID-19 injured list.

Shugart was reassigned Tuesday to minor-league camp by the Red Sox. Shugart was ineffective as a reliever last season at Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, as he registered a 5.31 ERA over 22 starts in 105.1 innings of work. The right-hander will provide depth at the upper levels again for Boston in 2023.
