Pittsburgh selected Beer from the Diamondbacks in the minor-league phase of Wednesday's Rule 5 Draft. Beer never quite got it going at the major-league level in Arizona, but he holds a career .863 OPS on the farm and is only 27 years old. He could get a legitimate look with the Pirates at first base or DH at some point in 2024.

Arizona outrighted Beer to Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. Beer was recently moved off the Diamondbacks' 40-man roster to clear a spot for starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt. In 79 plate appearances with Reno this season, Beer has slashed just .200/.266/.314. The 2018 first-round pick will remain in the organization but will likely be a depth option for the rest of the 2023 campaign.

The Diamondbacks designated Beer for assignment Wednesday. The transaction opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Brandon Pfaadt, whose contract was selected from Triple-A Reno ahead of Wednesday's game against the Rangers. The 26-year-old Beer had yet to appear in the majors this season and slashed .200/.266/.314 in 79 plate appearances with Reno. His poor numbers at Triple-A and lack of defensive flexibility mean he's unlikely to be claimed off waivers.

Beer was optioned to Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Beer clubbed two home runs in 10 spring training games but hit just .231 and was unable to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster. The 26-year-old played in 38 contests for Arizona last season and had a .189/.278/.243 slash line.
