The Marlins released Smeltzer on July 10. Even while injuries have decimated the Marlins' rotation depth at the big-league level, Smeltzer -- who made nine appearances (one start) for Miami in 2023 -- didn't perform well enough at Jacksonville to earn a call-up. The Marlins ultimately elected to replace him on the Jacksonville roster with right-hander Adam Oller, who signed a minor-league contract with the organization. Smeltzer posted a 3.69 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 32:13 K:BB across 31.2 innings at Triple-A prior to being cut loose.

The Marlins reassigned Smeltzer on Monday. Unless he negotiates a release from his minor-league deal with Miami, Smeltzer is likely to open the season as a swingman for the pitching staff at Triple-A Jacksonville. Smeltzer is heading into his second season with the Miami organization after he compiled a 6.45 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB across 22.1 innings at the big-league level in 2023.

Smeltzer signed a minor-league contract with the Marlins on Wednesday, Andersen Pickard of Prime Time Sports Talk reports. Smeltzer was pushed off the 40-man roster in Miami at the end of the regular season and then elected to become a free agent, but he is back as organizational depth for the 2024 campaign. The 28-year-old left-hander owns a career 4.32 ERA and 112:41 K:BB in 162.1 career major-league innings.

Smeltzer elected free agency Sunday. Smeltzer will get a head start on finding his next landing spot after spending the 2023 season in the Marlins organization. He made nine appearances spanning 22.1 innings at the big-league level, pitching to a 6.45 ERA and 1.48 WHIP.

Smeltzer cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday. Smeltzer has been added and removed from the Marlins' 40-man roster multiple times this season. He'll remain in the organization and hope to earn another promotion in the final weeks.
