Stewart opted out of his contract with the Padres on Saturday, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports. The 37-year-old had played 19 games for Triple-A El Paso, hitting .277/.333/.354. Stewart has appeared in at least one big-league game in 12 of the last 13 seasons but might be at the end of the road at this point, as he hasn't hit above .214 in the majors since 2015.

Stewart signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Thursday which includes an invitation to spring training. Stewart split time between Atlanta and Arizona in 2018, appearing in just eight big-league games between both stops. With Austin Hedges and Francisco Mejia both ahead of Stewart on the organizational depth chart, the veteran backstop doesn't figure to spend much (if any) time in the majors in 2019.

The Diamondbacks purchased Stewart's contract from Triple-A Reno on Saturday. The veteran was acquired Thursday from the Braves and finds himself on the major-league roster two days later. However, Stewart will struggle to find much playing time, now serving as the club's No. 4 catcher in an already busy time share between the top three options.

Stewart was traded from the Braves to the Diamondbacks on Thursday, Robert Murray of The Athletic Wisconsin reports. Stewart appeared in just five games for the Braves before being traded, struggling to an unsightly .214/.250/.214 slash line. He put together a similarly poor line with Triple-A Gwinnett, slashing .219/.299/.277 across 47 games. The veteran backstop should serve as organizational catching depth for Arizona.

The Braves outrighted Stewart to Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. Stewart lost his spot on the Braves' active and 40-man rosters after Kurt Suzuki overcame a short-term absence due to a triceps injury. Atlanta later brought in Rene Rivera on a waiver claim to serve as the organization's No. 3 catching option.
